Sports update

March has been a very busy time for students in sport. We have run our House Swimming Carnival and participated in division swimming. Cricket and tennis is well underway with most division tennis and cricket competitions complete and a large number of teams getting set for regional competitions.

Cricket

Gisborne Secondary College fielded all teams in cricket with the Year 8 boys, Intermediate boys, Intermediate girls and Senior boys winning through to the Division final. The Senior boys went down to Staughton College in an epic two dayer. The remaining Division finals will be played when School cricket resumes later in the year. Year 7 boys and girls cricket is yet to be played.

The Senior girls cricket team progressed directly through to Regional Championships and played very well all day going down to Strathmore in the first game and then convincing winners against Suzanne Cory.

Tennis

Gisborne Secondary College fielded a tennis mega team of 30 players. Year 7 boys and girls, Year 8 boys and girls and Intermediate girls have all won through to the Regional finals which will be played in Geelong.

Swimming

The House Swimming Carnival was held at Lancefield Memorial Pool with a reduced field of swimmers and the vibrance and colour from the Year 12’s in their costumes. While the competitive field was smaller this year, the quality of the swimming was exceptional.

A small team of 20 swimmers competed in the Division Swimming at Melton Waves. The caliber, courage and determination of our swimmers meant that Gisborne Secondary College was in a tight tussle for first place with Melton Secondary College all day. While the results have not been released to date, we are confident that we have secured second place. We took the time to celebrate the contribution to the swimming program of three sisters Isabel, Zoe and Ellie K who all swam in the senior girls freestyle relay event. Asher V swam 4th and made up a 10-metre deficit in the last 50 meters to miss out on first place by a finger nail. A team of 10 students will progress through to Regional Finals at Geelong on 30th March.

Sporting Teams coming up

The next interschool sports event will be Senior and Intermediate Volleyball that will be played on 29th March at Cobblebank.

Term 2 Sports Sign ups

Term 2 sports sign-ups will be available next week for students to sign up for sports. We will enter teams into the Division competition based on sign ups. It becomes problematic if students sign up and then don’t follow through with participation.

House Athletics

House Athletics is on Tuesday 2nd May and sign-ups will be held soon. This is a whole school event and all students are expected to attend.
