Mind Your Medicine!

During recent weeks, Team 3/4 students participated in a Life Education lesson, ‘Mind Your Medicine’, with a focus on learning skills and strategies for keeping themselves safe and well.

Through a variety of games and activities students:

- learned about the role medicines play in their lives

- learned about medicine names

- created labels for imaginary medicines that included all the important information (medicine name, what it’s for, who should take it, dosage and how to take, expiry date, safety warnings, how and where to store)

- learned different ways for how to keep themselves safe around medicines

3RO reflected on their learning and created a list of important messages:

  • Medicine can be an important part of keeping ourselves well.
  • If you take medicine, always make sure that the medicine is safe for you to use.
  • Make sure the labels are attached so that you know what the medicine is.
  • Only take new medicine, don’t take expired medicine. Expired medicine may not be effective.
  •  Before taking medicine, read the ingredients to make sure you’re not allergic to them.
  • Read how much of the medicine to take for each dose (the amount that you take each time).
  • If the medicine needs to be kept in the fridge, make sure you store it in the fridge.
  • Make sure the medicine is for your age – example if you are a child, an adult or a baby.
  • Make sure that you take the right medicine that you need.
  • Follow the instructions for how to take the medicine, such as a tablet, liquid or spray. If you need to take the medicine with water, or before or after a meal… make sure you do that.
  • Some medicine needs to be taken in the morning, some in the middle of the day, some at night. Make sure you take it when you are meant to.
  • If you are sick, go to the right place, like a doctor or pharmacist to find out the right medicine for your needs.
  • Never play with medicine.
