Performing Arts

2023

Hello again from the Performing Arts space!

We have had another fortnight of fun in Performing Arts, with students continuing to explore some of the different musical elements in more depth. We have explored pitch (high and low sounds) and dynamics (how loudly or softly a piece of music is played), as well as tempo (the speed at which a piece of music is played) and some associated words, such as grave, largo, adagio, andante, moderato, allegro and presto.

We have started looking at rhythm, with different year levels using different percussion instruments, including drums, resonator bells and xylophones to play short pieces of music that explore notes of different lengths, as well as create some rhythms of their own.

Our Grade 5 and 6 classes have been exploring the script for 'Rock Bottom', getting to know the music, characters and music in preparation for their auditions for our school production. Many students are excited about auditioning for a role, however please note auditions are not compulsory; some students may prefer not to audition for an acting role and would prefer to be in the chorus or backstage crew.

School Production

Our school production this year will be 'Rock Bottom' by Craig Hawes. The production will be run as a whole-school event, involving all our students from Foundation through to Grade 6, and will run across two nights, Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th July at The Besen Centre in Burwood. Our Foundation to Grade 2 students will perform on one of the two nights, and our Grade 3-6 students will perform on both nights.

Students in Grades 5 and 6 will shortly receive an expression of interest form for those who wish to audition be part of either the cast or the backstage crew. These forms must be returned by Friday 3rd March. Auditions will be held in Weeks 8 and 9 of this term.

Stay tuned for details including how you may be able to get involved. We will be calling on our talented school community for help with various aspects of the school production, including prop and costume-making, so if this sounds like you, we will be in touch soon.

Instrumental Music Lessons

Please remember that we offer private instrumental tuition at BPPS! We have several talented teachers, offering lessons on the piano, guitar, drums, violin, 'cello, flute and saxophone.

We also have Sally Cameron returning to BPPS. She will be offering vocal lessons, please see below:

Dear Parents,

My name is Sally Cameron and I teach vocal lessons.

I began to sing before I could talk and haven’t stopped since!

If this sounds a little like your child then singing could be for them!

I have an extensive music teaching career that has included running private choirs, teaching music classes and running the music departments at Wesley College and Ivanhoe Grammar, to vocal teaching for 8 years at Kingswood College before arriving at BPPS.

Typically the best age to start singing is between the ages of 6-9 years. At this stage it is easy to pick up new skills and techniques much faster whilst having fun during the process.

I do have some vacancies at this stage.

Any questions feel free to contact me by phone or email.

Warm wishes
