Secondary

It is hard to believe that we are already midway through the term! This week saw our Year 7 students enjoy their St Omer Experience at Woodman Point. Whilst the weather was hot, students and staff made the most of the various activities to get to know each other a bit better beyond the classroom environment, build connections and challenge themselves as an integral part of their transition to high school.

We welcomed Paul Dillon back to the College yesterday to address students in Years 10 to 12 on accurate and up-to-date alcohol and other drug information. Always entertaining and informative, Paul provided evidence-based insight into the impact of alcohol and other drugs as well as strategies for our young people to look after themselves and care for their friends in situations where drugs and alcohol are consumed. The DARTA website has excellent resources for parents interested in current research on this topic and Paul’s work.

Magis students are well underway preparing for their upcoming competitions: all the best to the Mock Trial and debating teams who have their first rounds in a couple of weeks.

It was great to see students and staff taking advantage of the commencement of Wellbeing Wednesdays this week. A reminder that if choosing to wear the sports uniform on Wednesdays, students are required to wear their House shirt, not the College polo. Students with NAS fixtures on Wednesdays after school will be required to change into their College polo shirt at the end of the day.

Year 7 St Omer Experience

St Omer is the town in the north of France where Mary Ward (one of our College Founders) established her ministry. In her spirit of being inclusive and welcoming, the St Omer Experience provides the Year 7 students an opportunity to connect and build relationships away from the normal school setting. By participating in various activities, including archery, climbing, raft building, beach games, sand sculpting, zipline, vertical challenges and team building games, students were able to challenge themselves while supporting each other.

Special thanks to the dedicated John XXIII staff who facilitated the activities and mentored the Year 7 students: Sean Oorloff, Brianna Gray, Ella Brindley, Conor O’Hara, Sarah Larsen, Brett Roberts, Catherine Roberts, Josh Bowen, Guillaume Hauer, Nicky Britton, Janeen Murphy, Clare Galati, Jo Wade, June Chiaroni, Adam Read, Anna Davila, Damian Owen, Ciaran Gallagher, Carla Tripi, Darren Kowal, Joyce Assibey-Bonsu, Katie Bennett, Janine Vivian and Luke Bostelman. Finally, thank you to the excellent Year 7 students who participated so enthusiastically and warmly with each other through the many activities offered. Although the heat was a challenge it did not prevent the group from embracing the experience.

Incursion Years 11 and 12 Materials Design - Textiles

Last week we invited a fashion designer, Karen Young into our classroom. She outlined her journey from teacher, photographer to successful fashion designer with her own label.

Karen shared her beliefs on the importance of sustainable fashion and using local people to create amazing designs. She also spoke about the importance of working with clients and getting their dreams into a reality with design and wearable fashion.

Students were then taught how to draw a “Croquis” which is a design mannequin drawing. From there they attempted their own rapid sketch drawings using their jacket designs to come up with a visual sketch of what they hope to create and sew.

The class had some good questions for Karen on how she came to be a successful fashion designer and they are all now well on their way to becoming fashion artists.

The Year 10 River Cruise will be held on Thursday 23 March. This is a much-anticipated event for the students as it provides an opportunity for them to socialise in a relaxed manner on the Swan River.
