Curriculum Matters 2

HASS

HASS is a combination of History, Geography and Civics and Citizenship. This term students will undertake their HASS inquiries in year level groupings. Year 3 students will work with Belinda Haley and Kathryn Baker,  while Year 4 students will work with Sofia Andreucci and Cate Berden.

Through studying Humanities and Social Sciences, students will develop the ability to question, think critically, solve problems, communicate effectively, make decisions and adapt to change.

Year 3 students will inquire into How do symbols,  events, individuals and places in my community make it unique?

Students examine how individuals and groups celebrate and contribute to communities in the past and present, through establishing and following rules, decision-making, participation and commemoration.

Year 4 students will inquire into How do different groups  shape our community?

and look into Australia’s diversity and influences. This will be followed by more of a History focus:

How did early sea journeys impact on people and the environment? which will focus on Australia prior to the late 1700s.

Themes of law and citizenship extend into their studies of diverse groups, the colonisation of Australia and other places, and how environmental sustainability is enacted.

Science

In Science this term, our focus will be on Chemical Sciences. We will be exploring how a change of state between solids and liquids can be caused by adding or removing heat. We will also be learning about natural and processed materials and how the properties of those materials influence their use.

In Term 2, our focus will be the Physical Sciences. We will continue our learning about heat and observe how heat can move from one object to another through friction, conduction and electricity. We will also be exploring forces and how they can be exerted by one object to another through direct contact or from a distance.

Throughout the semester, students will also be developing their Science Inquiry Skills where they will get opportunities to conduct scientific investigations, identify questions, make predictions and record observations. They will also be collecting data to identify patterns and compare their findings with their predictions.
