Weekly Gospel Reflection
Matthew 5:14-16
You are the light of the world
In last week's gospel, we are called to be the salt of the Earth. Through this metaphor we asked to add 'flavour' to people's lives through displaying and sharing his love. After Jesus says this, he goes on to tell his followers that “you are the light of the world.” This reading is the Gospel reading for this week's Opening School Mass.
But what does this mean? It in short, just as physical light dispels darkness, so too should we live as a light in a world that is far too often darkened by war, famine, poverty and other problems.
Jesus explores this metaphor further in the following passage. He says that when people light a lamp (or turn on a light) they set it high so that everyone else can see it. They don't hide it away under a bowl where no one can see.
In this year's theme "Light the Way," we are called to be beacons throughout our community. This is more important than ever as our society recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the ongoing economic uncertainty that has followed.
Our Year 6 Student leaders this year do not shirk from this calling. This week they will commitment themselves to the challenge of being examples, ‘lighting the way’ for their peers saying:
We look forward to leading by example through showing kindness to others and being ready to be a hand of friendship and support…We ask God to be with us and guide us to light the way…
May our community come together throughout 2023 and light the way for a world in need!
