PE

Over the past two weeks all students except 5/6 have been learning and developing their basketball skills. With two brand new basketball stands installed and using two new mobile basketball stands (lowering height for Prep to grade 4), it has been great to see everyone loving the basketball drills. Students have been working on their bouncing/dribbling skills, passing, catching and shooting. The students skills and confidence has developed considerably over the last two weeks and many students are playing basketball at recess and lunch, which is great to see.

The grade 5/6 students have been using their PE/Health time to complete their Bike Education program so they could participate on the Big Ride Out, which took place on Wednesday 7th December.

Health

Our health classes finished last week, finishing with more body parts. Students looked at the endocrine and the urinary system and hair. It was a great term of health and students thoroughly enjoyed learning more about their body and how it works, which hopefully will give them a better understanding of how to be fit, healthy and active.

Bike Education

The grade 5/6 students finished their bike education program with a Big Ride Out, starting from school and riding safely on the footpaths and roads on the backstreets and parks and finally on the beach bike path to Mordialloc Beach. Everyone did a great job with some minor hiccups that were quickly fixed. The students celebrated their ride by having some play time on the beach, lunch, some hot chips and an ice cream. We headed back to school and arrived back at 2.30pm.

The 3/4s have also been participating in Bike Ed this term, starting with a safety lesson in class, then learning skills on the netball courts before venturing out on the nearby footpaths. The final lesson was held on Friday 9th December riding around the footpaths and Le Page Park a number of times. The focus being to ride safely with a large group and use communication to successfully complete the ride.

Well done to all 3-6 students on their participation in the program and successfully completing your riding program.

Thanks for a great year with both PE and Health. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed teaching both curriculum areas with you all and seeing your growth and development in these areas.

Have a wonderful Christmas and safe holidays and see you all again next year.

Visual Arts

Last week in visual arts students continued to work on threading and textiles. Years 1 to 4 students were shown how to make a tassel and pom pom out of yarn. Foundation students welcomed summer by making a suncatcher out of a paper plate and cellophane. Year 5/6 students continued to work on their sewing skills, using the overstitch when finishing their little character pillow.

Year 6 students completed the final stages of their ‘Leaving Your Mark’ art project. All students have created beautiful mosaic art pieces that will be displayed outside the art room in the eating area. 😊

Culture Studies

This week in Culture Studies, we continued to learn about Greek culture, focusing on Greek celebrations for example, Naming Day, New Year’s Day, Epiphany Day, Clean Monday (Lent) and Easter Sunday. Students were able to make a hexagon kite, which are usually flown during the various celebration.

Thanks everyone for an amazing year, have a great Christmas and a safe and happy holiday. I look forward to working with you all again next year.

Library Update

Our Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success. Thank you to everybody who came with their families and purchased books, posters or stationary items. With your help, we made over $4000, and over $800 of that goes straight back to our school.

Could all books from the library please be returned this week, and no more borrowed. Teachers have received an email outlining which students still have books to return.

At our assembly tomorrow, there will be prizes for the best readers in every grade. So stay tuned!

Thank you all for making such great use of the library this year, especially to the fabulous library leaders who helped with tidying, cataloguing, and stickering twice a week. It could not have worked without you!

Happy holidays and keep on reading!
