Specialist Classes

Term 1

Specialist Area

Statement

German

(Adam Kump)

In Term 1, the students will begin their educational journey of learning German at Billanook Primary School, with a particular emphasis placed on communicative, game-orientated exercises and songs. The students will learn colours, numbers up to 12, greetings and how to introduce themselves. They will be challenged to regularly use and develop their speaking skills via participation in conversations, games and role-plays linked up to the hand puppets ‘Hans Hase’ and ‘Felix und Franzi’, and the video series ‘Deutsch mit Socke’. Intercultural learning will also play a vital role in the students’ German language acquisition, with customs, traditions and festivities being presented and discussed during lessons.

Performing Arts

(Ellie Foster)

This year, students will engage in all areas of Performing Arts including Music, Dance and Drama, with a focus on Drama for Term 1. Foundation students will be introduced to a variety of performance techniques including mime, movement and characterisation. Using their imagination, props and storybook themes, students will have opportunities to creatively express themselves and build confidence while performing in front of peers. Students will develop social skills and practise teamwork while cooperating in small groups to create role-plays and puppet shows. While students take turns to perform, others will apply attentive listening skills to show respect and encouragement for their fellow classmates.

Visual Arts

(Amanda West)

In Term 1, students will learn about primary and secondary colours through various painting experiences. The art elements of line, shape and texture will be explored during drawing and modelling activities. Students will develop their modelling skills by creating a clay snail. They will be encouraged to share their visual artworks, as well as discuss and appreciate the art of their peers. All Billanook students will begin the year by contributing to a colourful collaboration, inspired by artist Hiromi Tango’s joyful rainbow artworks.

Physical Education (P.E)

(Chris Steele)

During this term students will focus on exploring movement and physical activity. Participation will include minor games and activities to develop fundamental motor skills particularly catching, kicking and skipping. This will be explored through the use of body and space awareness with equipment such as hoops, beanbags, soft balls and ropes.
