Peer Support Breakup BBQ

On Friday the 26th of March the Year 7's and Year 11 Peer Support Leaders got together for their break up. During Term 1 the Year 11's help the Year 7's settle into Secondary College with games, discussions and activities. A few of the leaders and one of the Year 7 students spoke about Peer Support on the day. I have included the speeches below:

“We’ve been getting quite a few questions during lessons about “why we have to do Peer Support?” or even “what’s the point in Peer Support?” Well, the Peer Support program is meant to encourage friendships throughout the school. Some people find the transition from primary to high school quite intimidating, so we hope by having someone older who knows more about the school has been supportive, fun or even challenging for you to take a step out of your comfort zone. We also hope you enjoyed the activities and you made a new a friend or two, and just because the peer support sessions have finished, it doesn’t mean you can’t still say hi or ask us for help. When you get the opportunity to become a Peer Support leader, you may find that through your own experiences in participating in these sessions helpful and may even want to support year 7’s who are starting out. We hope you enjoyed the peer support program.”

– Francesca Lucot and Haylee Banfield

“Peer support is commonly seen as an opportunity for Year 7’s to grasp their new environment and learn about their fellow peers. I can confidently say that, as a leader, peer support is also an opportunity for Year 11’s to do something better, to help someone else, and to learn how helping others can benefit everyone. So, thank you Year 7’s allowing us to guide you in the right direction and thank you for teaching us to help others.”

– Tanzin Myers

“Thank you to the Year 11 group leaders for helping us with the start of school. Your activities have kept us excited in the first stressing weeks of school. We are extra thankful for the lollies you have provided us.”

– Marli Cottam

“On behalf of all Peer Support Leaders I would like to thank all the teachers for helping us with anything big or small. Whether it was opening the peer support room, helping us find Year 7's that had forgotten we had Peer Support on the day or just helping us with any problem that arose. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed and we truly appreciate everything you have done. Thanks once again.”
