Year 9 Myself Program

MyCity Excursion

Melbourne Star Observation Wheel

The MyCity Class of 19 students visited the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel for their second excursion. Students separated themselves into three cabins to appreciate the beauty of the city from a 360-degree perspective. Some students appeared excited and kept taking photos. Some students felt that the wheel ran a little bit slowly, but they still stayed patient and calm to look around and found the flight enjoyable in the end. After the flight, they visited the exhibition of Melbourne Star and had lunch in the District.

The leader group planned the visit, liaised with the site office and implemented the planning. Their organisational abilities, communication skills, time management skills and teamwork spirits were well demonstrative and impressive. They made good use of Google map and PTV journey planner to check transportation routes and timetables, and they asked the tram driver for confirmation of the stops.

Other students followed the leaders’ instructions and upheld the school values “Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Teamwork” by complying with the Melbourne Star safety requirements, showing respect for peers and others in the public transport and the Docklands District, accepting people from a culturally linguistic diverse background in their group, disposing of their lunch waste appropriately, and supporting the leaders to carry out the tasks.

As a member of the Wellbeing team, I appreciate the efforts of the teachers Ning Zhang and Cathy Gucciardo to coordinate the activity and I feel proud of the students’ active participation and their commitment to the excursion.

It was delightful to be a part of the Year 9 student-led My City excursion a couple of weeks ago. The student leaders George and Johnathan displayed impressive leadership skills and teamwork organising the trip and coordinating with the staff and students. They confidently managed unexpected changes to their plans as they arose throughout the journey.

Excursions provide the students with excellent opportunities to develop relationship-building skills among the peers outside the classroom setting. Friendship is an important element in students' lives. The excursion certainly was a wonderful opportunity for students to identify different strengths in each other and help one another when needed.

A Successful St Kilda Beach Adventure

We had our last MyCity excursion for term one last week. Both classes went together and visited the historical St. Kilda area. Beginning with a stroll down Acland Street, we saw many spectacular old Jewish cake shops. We then made our way to the historical St Kilda pier. St Kilda grew as one of the centres of Melbourne’s Jewish community.

We had a great photo competition with students airdropping their photos to win a free lunch, followed by our picnic lunch in the park near Luna Park. Many students reflected on their day trip to an inner-city beach suburb. Some were considering revisiting.
