Harmony Week

Harmony Week

Harmony Week is a time to celebrate Australian multiculturalism and the successful integration of migrants into our community. Australia is one of the most successful multicultural countries globally; according to the 2016 Census, 30% of Australians were born overseas and 49% have at least one parent who has come to this country as a migrant.

Much of Australia’s growth and prosperity has resulted from the fact that we welcome newcomers to our shores. Migrants have brought with them a wealth of skills and cultural experiences that have enabled us to grow and thrive. Blended with our Nation’s First People, everyone has made a strong contribution to Australia’s national identity.

The diversity of the Australian population is reflected in the Doncaster Secondary College community. Did you know that within our College community, we have 52 different nationalities? Of our students, 23% were born overseas. Additionally, 61% of students have at least one parent that was born overseas.

The theme for Harmony Week in 2021 is 'everyone belongs''.  This is a time to reflect on our diverse heritage and recognise the importance of diversity. Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Week. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. At the start of the week, staff took the opportunity to mark the occasion by scouring through their wardrobes and adding orange to their attire.

In Discovery Middle School students learnt more about cultural diversity and created paper chains to reflect their own cultural heritage. Students were given silhouettes to decorate using colours that reflect their cultural background. While in Art Club students used poster paper to spell out Harmony  Week and begin decorating their posters using the flags from some of the nations that are a part of the Doncaster Secondary College Community.

The week ended with a musical performance on the Outdoor Stage at lunchtime. Students were treated to outstanding performances by our very talented bands. A huge thank you to the Music Department and the bands for their involvement. Thank you also to those staff who contributed to Harmony Week.
