Talented International Student Photographers

Jenny and I were incredibly fortunate to get the opportunity to take the role of “student photographers” for the 2021 swimming carnival. It was wonderful to see all the Year 12s dressing up regardless of the rainy weather and other year levels participating in the competition. We got there early in the morning even before the teachers arrived. This helped us get a chance to observe our surroundings and adjust our camera settings. Although the weather was not on our side, we managed to get through this carnival with laughter and excitement.  I would like to thank Mr Tomada for recognising our passion for photography, Ms Hayward for giving us a chance to experience this and my friend Gavin L. of 10D for his assistance while helping me edit the photographs.

International Students enjoy Sports Club

Friday’s Sports Club is one of many clubs DSC offers to our international students. please find their reflection of Sports Club experience as below:

Since the start of this year, every Friday I punctually go to the Friday sports club to play badminton. I usually play with my friends. At first, I was quite nervous about going there, because I was not good at badminton and I don’t really know how to communicate with people that I don’t know. But after a few weeks, I found this club really interesting. Everyone here is very nice and friendly, they are all willing to make friends with me and teach me skills. Although I’m not as skilled in badminton, I enjoy playing it. My peers who participate in the sports club teach me new skills every time. I enjoy going there as I not only get to socialize with my peers but I get to build stronger bonds with new people. I can feel that I’m physically healthier now. And I’m looking forward to Friday. I have made many lifelong friends there. Now I enjoy playing sports and making new friends both at the same time.  I feel a lot of happiness here and I like this club a lot. I think I would probably keep going to the Friday sports club.

On Fridays, I attend the sports club and most of the week I play badminton and soccer with my friends. It’s a good opportunity to spend Fridays' afternoon with the peers and being physically active. I enjoy attending the sports club because it’s a way to spend some time outside and get fresh air as well as getting away from school work.

International Student Program Homework Club

Our newcomers have been familiar quite well with their new learning environment, rules, and regulations. However, the ISP team always commits to provide endless support along the way of their journey at our school. Recently, we have provided another important session to give further knowledge and understanding around healthy lifestyle and mental health management. During the session, we have discussed with them the signs of mental illness and culture shock to help them be able to identify and seek support if that happens to them at some points. We have explained and brought up some different scenarios so that our new students can assess whether they should speak up and seek help. We also included clear instruction on how to get medical advice in this session. Finally, we have reinforced our students to book student-led conferences since it is the opportunity to have one on one meeting with their teachers to receive specific feedback to achieve a good academic improvement individually. We are so glad to see that our new students have now gained knowledgeable information and understand how to lead their daily lifestyles in the healthy method.

Homework Club is very helpful for me because when I do not understand anything I can ask Ms Lee and Ms Huang. Both of them are very friendly and kind, and they always explain to me very well. If the school have any events, Ms Lee and Ms Huang always encourage students to join and make us feel like we are part of this community. So, I think homework club is very helpful and I am happy to engage with other students during the session as they are very friendly.

During the homework club, many of my questions have been answered. Ms Lee and Ms Huang have plenty of activities to help us improve our knowledge about mental health and physical health. I have more opportunities to practice my English and enjoy my school life at DSC. Now I am more capable to adapt myself to Australian culture, and we also discuss our life, study, or other interesting topics during the session.

Homework club is really fun and I really enjoy it because I get to meet many other students from across all year levels and backgrounds. We talk about many topics like culture shock, mental health etc. The best part is that we get snacks and get to know our teachers a little more.

During homework club, I can read many topics which I have never heard about. Moreover, I can expand my prior knowledge in every class. Homework club is very helpful when we discuss things like wellbeing and other health topics. It is worth every second I spend in this program after school class.
