Sport

Commitment

This is an issue that is raised every year. When we open expressions of interest for sport at BMGS, students are required to complete a Survey Monkey form. This signifies that they wish to play the sport that they have chosen.

From this, BMGS nominates teams to the ISA and organises external coaches.

Teams are then chosen and named.

It has been extremely disappointing the number of students who have gone through this process and then decided that they do not want to play a particular sport or wish to change sports.

This shows a lack of commitment to both the team that you have been chosen in and to your teammates.

BMGS has a reputation for being very competitive across all sports and this is not only a result of the students who train and play hard, but also the staff who coach and organise these sports.

Please communicate with your coach or MIC if there are any issues so that these can be addressed and games can continue for all of our teams.

COVID Guidelines

We must still adhere to COVID guidelines for sport therefore all players, spectators and officials are required to use the QR code relevant to their sport to sign into the school grounds.

These codes will be located on the table at the top of the stairs to the Sports Centre.

Please ensure that you are also social distancing around the grounds and accept any advice from the COVID officer. Thank you in advance for your support.

Congratulations

ISA Hockey

This week the ISA Open Hockey trials were held at Moorebank. Congratulations to Katerina Reynolds (Year 11) who was selected to the Open Girls' team and James Reynolds (Year 8) who was selected to the Open Boys' team. We wish them both well at the NSWCIS Championships.

Football

Congratulations goes to Rosie Sullivan (Year 12) who has been selected in the ISA Open Girls Football team. This is the 3rd successive year that Rosie has been selected in this team. We wish Rosie all the best at the NSWCIS Football Championships.

Koko Wilson (Year 12) also attended the ISA Football trials and has been named a Shadow player.

Uniforms

Uniforms are expected to arrive next Tuesday. Unfortunately, the factory had to stop production due to COVID issues. Please ensure that you have paid for your uniform in advance so that they can be distributed as soon as they arrive.

Cross Country

The BMGS Cross Country team was selected at the end of Term 1 and all students are required to return their note if they have not already done so.

If you do not own a BMGS Basketball singlet, you will need to hire a singlet from the Uniform Shop to compete in this Carnival. Please organise this as soon as possible.

Please come and see me in my office if you have any questions regarding upcoming sporting events.

Rugby

BMGS U14 XV were defeated by Redlands, 32-12

The match was notable for the significant number of new players who played their first game of Rugby. It was great to see how the players have applied themselves to all of the new skills and challenges that come with learning about and playing the game of Rugby. BMGS got out of the blocks well, scoring an early try by Max Klein playing in his first game. However, tackling errors and some defensive hesitation saw the U14’s go into half-time 22-5 down.  It was 2 tries to 1 in the second half, with Rupert Fulton scoring an outstanding solo 70m try. Other outstanding performances were from Captain Zac Filla and Arthur Gorrick-Pero.   Congratulations to all of the debutants: Jake Elliott, Henry Watts, William Houghton, Max Klein, Charlie Manners, Rowan Brischetto and Jem Sullivan.

BMGS U15 XV were defeated by Redlands, 38-12

The final score did not reflect the tight game that unfolded in the U15 squad. Led by their courageous captains Oscar Costigan and Jasper Frosh, the U15 team went into the game with five run-on players playing their first game and three on the bench who had just played their first game in the U14 XV.  Rupert Fulton dominated the lineouts and consistently provided BMGS clean ball. The half time score was 12-5 and the team felt they were in with a chance, however, the inexperience showed in the second half when their defensive line was unable to readjust and slide on a number of occasions which resulted in three late tries to Redlands.   Congratulations to the team on a positive first outing. Special mention must be made of our debutantes Hamish McLeod, Quinn Blabey, Julian Brischetto, Jon McHugh and River Hensen.

BMGS 1st XV defeated Redlands, 45-15

Blue Mountains Grammar started off strongly with stalwart defence and aggression. The students were able to capitalise with two tries. However, lapses in defence and poor tackling lead to quick penalties and allowed Redlands to come back into the game with a try of their own. BMGS went into the half time break up 12-5.  The students rallied in the half time break and regained their composure. Forwards were able to maintain their physicality and pressure on Redland’s defence, which started to generate opportunities for their backline to go to work. The boys were able to score five tries in the second half. However, being the first game; fitness became an issue with Redlands being able to score two late tries. Special mention should be made of Jack Wiseman (four tries), Max Lucas (two tries) and a try to Oscar Jones Romeo, Mani Hitchenson for his control and direction of the team and Lincoln Thompson for leading the team with his aggressive defence and physicality.

This Saturday the students will take on Central Coast Grammar School at home.

Girls' Football

BMGS Firsts defeated Oxley College, 5-1

The Firsts girls started the game with high intensity and communication which meant that we maintained most of the possession in the first half. With all the pre-season training the girls undertook, we outshone the other team on fitness, despite having no subs. The first half ended with the score 3-0 our way and, after a quick chat, we were back on the field. We scored another goal, however, Oxley put up a good fight and ended up scoring a goal of their own. After some tenacious work from all the girls despite the heat and tiredness we managed to score another goal to secure the 5-1 win. Great game, girls!

BMGS Junior A were defeated by Chevalier, 3-0

It was a delight to see such determination, teamwork and persistence on the field in our first Football game of the season against Chevalier College. Despite having only ten players and no substitutes, our team worked tirelessly in maintaining strong defensive play and did well to concede only three goals. Ashley and Babette were outstanding as our goal keepers and they played a pivotal role in keeping our score line minimal. Thalia, Gretel, Tara, Babette and Matilda put in an amazing effort to regain possession and forced the other team out of the 18 yard box in pressure situations (despite often being outnumbered by Chevalier's Strikers and attacking Midfielders). Meenatchi, Matilda, Billy and Indira were hardworking as our midfield and created many opportunities for the forwards by passing some great through balls, opening up the play and regaining possession throughout the game. Ashley, Billy and Indigo had some close goal scoring opportunities, however, where often outnumbered by Chevalier's strong line of defence. Considering this was the first time this team has played together, and being short one player, this team shows great potential and I have no doubt that the girls' quality of Football will continue to improve throughout the season. A special welcome to our Year 7 girls who have joined BMGS Football this year.  In addition, I would like to congratulate Indira and Billy who played their first ever game of Football. These girls showed great spatial awareness and positional play in their debut game. I am excited to see what the rest of the football season brings for this great team of girls.

Netball

BMGS Firsts defeated Oakhill College, 62-42

It was an awesome start to the season with a resounding win against Oakhill College 2. The Firsts' speed of play was too much for the opposition and near perfect shooting from Olivia and Brynn put even more pressure on Oakhill. Pheobe played through fatigue and always found space. Mia also pushed through weariness playing her first full game at Centre for the Firsts and finished strongly in the fourth quarter.  The real highlight of the game was the amazing back three of Eliza, Ellen and Ella. Smart and tight defence led to plenty of tips and touches, which led to many intercepts, which led to uncertain and frustrated play from Oakhill. A brilliant full team game to start the season.  We send our well wishes to Lorena and Zoe who couldn't play this weekend and hope you are both ready to play again soon (because we are too tired not to have any subs).

BMGS Opens defeated Redlands, 19-16

Our first game for 2021 was an away game against Redlands. It was very exciting to see the girls back on the court after a short season last year. We started very strongly, scoring on all our Centre passes and working hard in defence. We were able to capitalise when we won the ball back, which allowed us to be in a good position at the end of the first quarter. The girls held this lead throughout the game, despite Redlands coming close towards the end of the match. Our defensive pressure all the way down the court showed the determination to win the ball back. Well done to all girls on a great win, 19-16.

Coach – Lauren Wade

BMGS Intermediates were defeated by Redlands, 47-20

The girls came up against a strong Redlands team, however, developed confidence throughout the game and, by the end, were moving the ball more smoothly down the court. Strong defence from Izabella Craig and the relentless effort of Tarana Stubenrauch in the mid-court were highlights. The girls continued to push hard and work towards team goals that were set for each quarter. Onwards and upwards!

Coach – Viki Stanton

BMGS Juniors were defeated by Redlands, 31-10

The score did not reflect the game this week as the girls were competitive throughout. Fantastic defence from Ruby Roberts caused some trouble for the Redlands shooters and Elizabeth Isbister did a great job in our goal end, developing confidence throughout the game. All girls listened to feedback and advice offered, making great attempts to incorporate suggestions into their own game. They were positive and encouraging and we are looking forward to the season ahead.

Hockey

BMGS Junior A were defeated by Central Coast Grammar School, 5-0

Our first game of the season as the BMGS Junior A team, resulted in a win for Central Coast Grammar School. The match played on Saturday was challenging for our team and our Goalie particularly  responded extremely well to the constant pressure of the opposition.  All the girls made a terrific effort and as a team we can improve our spacing on the field and working the ball out of the defence. Well done to CCGS for playing a good game. Despite the score of 5-0, our team finished the game with a smile and we look forward to getting back out on the field next week.
