A Triumph of Talent and Generosity

These last two weeks have swelled my heart and filled me with pride at the passion, commitment and talent of the many members of our community. Behind each of these outstanding initiatives are the innovation and commitment of my amazing staff team; people of whom I am very proud.

  • Last week Year 8 slept overnight at Bungawarra to immerse themselves in their learning of both Science and Geography.
  • The Senior School production of Much Ado About Nothing was a triumph of teamwork and dramatic prowess. Many have reflected to me that they believe it was one of the best dramatic performance they have seen at our School.
  • Rehearsals for the Junior School production of Matilda the Musical continue and have all of us eagerly anticipating another outstanding show
  • Our three Senior School F1 in Schools teams recently competed in the National Finals and we eagerly await their results.
  • Recently, our Senior School Debating teams went on the road and returned with three out of four victories.
  • Senior School ISA sport began last weekend and every team made those on the sidelines proud. There were many impressive victories, however, none moreso than the Rugby First XV who won their first game in many years.
  • The Junior School Da Vinci Decathlon team took on all comers this week in the State Finals.

Many of these performances represent outstanding achievements. Of course, we are just as proud of those who persist and persevere under difficult circumstances as those who excel, produce something amazing and/or come away with a win.

Of course, the whole BMGS community performed brilliantly this week; a fact that will not surprise anyone who is familiar with this school. Every year Blue Mountains Grammar School demonstrates that it has a generous heart. We give to charities and serve alongside local not-for-profits to make the lives of others better. Our students are prepared to go to almost any measure to raise funds for those less fortunate. Among other lengths they sleep out in the cold, they walk the 45km to Bungawarra and paddle hundreds more along the Murray. Nonetheless, yet again I cannot help but be extraordinarily proud of this School for embracing our Giving Day so generously. Donations have well exceeded our expectations, reaching a total of over $365,000; more than one thousand dollars for every day of every year hereafter that our students will benefit from the new Student Centre.

Thank you to everyone who has donated and thank you to Mr Cunningham who sponsored the event. Thanks also to our many volunteers who assisted at one of our sausage sizzles or in our call centre. I am especially proud of the many student volunteers who courageously occupied our telephones and represented their school so beautifully.

What an action-packed few weeks!

Mr Ian Maynard
