VCAL News

The Senior VCAL class completed their Responsible Service of Alcohol certificates at school on the 22nd of February. This was a full day of the moral, ethical and legal responsibilities of alcohol service as well as the health and societal impacts of alcohol misuse.

Now that they have completed their training and assessments, they are able to use this certificate to look for work in venues where alcohol is served. This, with the Safe Food and Barista certificates from last year makes these students job-ready for hospitality but also builds self-confidence and experiences beyond the school gate.

Seniors are now busy securing their work placements for the first semester of their final year. Many have already been successful in finding an employer willing to take them on.

Intermediate VCAL students had a busy day on Tuesday 23rd of February. The day was spent learning about the factors involved in safe food handling, from personal hygiene to kitchen cleanliness and they earned their certificates that they can present to any business where food is prepared when they are looking for a job. They also did their basic barista training, learning the ins and outs of commercial coffee machines and how to prepare some of the most popular coffees. There will be opportunities to extend this training to a higher level for those students who are not covering this in their SBA or VET courses.

“The purpose of stories, which in the words of writer Craig Silvey, exists to promote empathy, to test preconceptions and to transform opinions”.

We have been studying the Australian Film “Jasper Jones”. It is a film that shows us how by understanding our strengths we can make some changes for the better: “Against a backdrop of racial tension, misunderstanding and prejudice.” The film, its events and themes, is an excellent reminder to us that standing up courageously for yourself and the truth is always the right path.

We are covering a number of the Writing, Reading & Oracy Outcomes during the course of this film study.
