Year 7B Activities

7B’S START TO YEAR 7:

Food Tech:

This semester our class has been participating in Food Tech. We have made so many delicious foods including; cheese and chive muffins, fruit salad, scones, quinoa salad and tea cake; these are just some of the mouth-watering foods we will make this term. Food Tech is very fun, but brace yourself because this fun activity also includes MATH! But don’t worry all it involves is measurements, to measure foods or liquids, also to measure grams, that measures how much of a food you need, like butter. Also remember that hygiene plays a VERY big role in Food Tech, its super important to wash your hands, have your hair tied back, be wearing an apron and have shoes on. These rules are not only for your hygiene but your safety as well.

Health:

In Health we have been learning about sleep and the stages of sleep. We completed a survey based on our own sleep and this activity gave us an insight into the quality of our sleep and if we needed to improve it. The different stages of sleep include stage 1 which is the light stage of sleep during this time you can be woken up very easily and may experience hypnic jerks or muscle spasms. The next stage is stage 2, stage 2 is getting heavier, during this stage you cannot be woken up as easily and your heart rate will begin to slow down. Another very important thing about sleep is making sure you are getting enough, teenagers should be getting at least 8-10 hours of sleep every night and adults should be getting around 7-8 hours of sleep.

English:

In 7B English we have been reading a novel called ‘Fish in a Tree’. It’s very interesting and is based on a girl named Ally. It talks about how she is always in trouble and tries to change that. It’s very inspiring and entertaining to read. We have also been doing a pre-test on reading on a website called, ‘cars and stars’.

In spelling we have been working on rhyming, suffixes, vowels and compound words. It’s a fun thing to learn and has a big impact on our understanding and future.

In the end English has been fun so far, we can’t wait to learn more.

Music:

Recently in Music, we have been working on Jingles and learning how to read music notes. We have also been playing piano and writing music with the whole class. Also, our class has been using the keyboards to play little nursery rhymes like ‘Mary had a little lamb’, ‘Twinkle twinkle little star’, etc. We have also been studying the theory of Music, which is quite interesting.

Maths:

In Maths we have been doing a variety of things, such as learning the orders of operation (B.O.D.M.A.S), and Pascal's triangle. Here is an example:

                                                                        1

                                                            1                      1

                                                1                      2                      1

                                    1                      3                      3                      1

                        1                      4                      6                      4                      1

            1                      5                      10                    10                    5                      1

1                      6                      15                    20                    15                    6                      1

This is a Pascal's triangle, you work it out by adding the two numbers above to get the next number. The bold and underlined numbers are our example: you add the two numbers 3+3 and you get 6 so you write it down underneath to get a pattern. We have also started scaffolding which is where you get split into groups determined by a test and what you need to learn and then you do some activities. In the activities we do with your group, you get a box and you do the work inside, there are about three-four activities inside.
