Year 10s - Selecting their Courses for 2022

Year 10’s currently complete VCE Unit 1 Industry & Enterprise, this runs every Wednesday. Some students don’t participate in I & E because they are engaged in either an SBAT or the Project Ready program.

Over recent weeks, students in I and E have begun identifying and researching vocations of interest.

These activities assist in discovering vocations that might suit them. Some students have a clear idea of what they want to do when they leave school others find it more challenging.

This week we commenced the subject selection and information process in Industry and Enterprise, students will be counselled individually. Extra staff, with experience in subject selection and course counselling, will be coming into these classes on a to help them better understand the path from Year 10 towards vocations of interest.

WEDNESDAY 2 JUNE: During Industry & Enterprise classes: Student information sessions will be conducted to fully explain VCE, VCAL, SBAT and VET and what their options will be.

WEDNESDAY 14 JULY: Students will receive their subject selection packs including course handbooks in class while that evening Parent will be invited to attend the Year 10 Parent information night. An explanation of VCE, VCAL, SBAT and VET and what they mean to you will be delivered. You’ll be able to have all your questions answered.

WEEK 2 OF TERM 3: Subject selection interviews, parents will pre-book 15 min appointment to bring their child along and confirm their subject choices for 2022. Day(s) and details to be confirmed.

Appointments will be available during the day and evening to ensure access for all families. At these appointments parents and their students will be able to ask questions and clarify things before committing their 2022 subject preferences. Further details will be provided closer to the end of term.

Planning on studying teaching in the future?

If you are planning on applying for an undergraduate education degree in the future, you will need to be aware of selection criteria. These vary between states.

VICTORIAN COURSES

Achieve a minimum ATAR of 70 - Some universities will require a higher ATAR. You may be able to access entry into courses with a lower ATAR if you are eligible for ATAR adjustment points.

How much will your first University Degree cost?

It’s important to consider how much it will cost to study at university. Your first degree will be an ‘undergraduate’ degree, such as a Bachelor degree, Associate Degree, or a university Diploma.

COMMONWEALTH SUPPORTED PLACE (CSP)

A CSP is a place at university where the Government pays for some of your course, and you pay the rest. This is called the student contribution amount. You are entitled to a CSP at university or a higher education institute if you are:

An Australian Citizen - residing in Australia for at least one unit of study contributing towards their course of study
A New Zealand Citizen - residing in Australia for the duration of their study.
A permanent visa holder - residing in Australia for the duration of their study.
The course has Commonwealth Supported Places.

STUDENT CONTRIBUTION AMOUNT

How much you owe for your university subjects and course will vary based on

the course discipline you are studying. Study in some areas is more expensive than others (see Bands below)
if you are studying at a Government funded university or a private institute

STUDENT CONTRIBUTION BANDS

Courses fall into discipline ‘bands’. This means that no matter where you study in Australia, CSP courses will cost roughly the same. The bands are structured according to fields of study. The following are the 2021 minimum bands:

Band 1 - $3950 per year

Agriculture, English, mathematics, education, clinical psychology, Indigenous and foreign languages, nursing, statistics etc.

Band 2 - $7950 per year

Other health, allied health, built environment, computing, engineering, surveying, science, environmental studies, pathology, visual and performing arts, professional pathway psychology, professional pathway social work.

Band 3 - $11,300 per year

Dentistry, medicine, veterinary science.

Band 4 - $14,500 per year

Law, accounting, administration, economics, commerce, communications, society and culture.

HECS-HELP LOAN

CSP students can apply for a HECS-HELP loan providing they meet residency eligibility criteria. This loan will enable you to defer your payments until you have to start paying back your student contribution amount.

You can make voluntary repayments at any time.

Examples

Nursing

John is a CSP student studying a Bachelor of Nursing at Swinburne University. The minimum he will pay for the first year of full time studies is $3950. He decides to defer his payments through the HECS-HELP scheme. John will have to pay some of his loan off during the years he earns over $46,620.

Criminology

Sarah started studying a Bachelor of Criminology at Monash University this year. She deferred her payments via HECS-HELP. At the end of semester 1 she decided to defer her studies until 2022 due to health reasons. Sarah only incurred a debt for her semester 1 studies which was around $7,250.

Fee Paying Places

Some private institutes offer fee paying places for undergraduate courses.

Students don’t receive Government subsidies and are required to pay the full fee amount. They can apply for FEE-HELP and defer their payments.

VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION

From 2022, If you begin your enrolment with a public or private university and apply for a CSP, HECS-HELP or FEE HELP, you must have passed at least 50 per cent of your total attempted units (subjects) in order to remain eligible for any of these schemes.
