GSSC Leadership Team

I would like to introduce myself as the Acting Campus Principal at the McGuire Campus of the Greater Shepparton Secondary College. I commenced this role at the beginning of term 2; and have thoroughly enjoyed meeting up with familiar faces and meeting many new students and families during this time.

We have had a busy time as the term has unfolded. The highlight across each of our campuses has been the return of our face-to-face assemblies.  Our student led assemblies have provided opportunities to introduce school wide expectations, promote school activities and events, and celebrate student achievements. Our students have appreciated being able to assemble in large groups once again and have been enthusiastic participants.

Our Year 7 and Year 9 students undertook the NAPLAN assessments in week 4. Our students completed a Reading, Writing, Language Conventions and Numeracy assessment over three days. The results of these assessments with be available in August. NAPLAN assessments provide information about the academic growth our students make over time. Our teachers use a range of other formative assessments to plan units of study and to cater for all the differences in student achievement from lesson to lesson, week by week. We were very pleased with the effort our students made this year.

Over the next fortnight all students across our campuses will complete the Student Attitudes to School Survey. This survey provides students with the opportunity to express their views on the various aspects of their school experiences, while the college will analyse the results to make improvements and to build on our strengths.

Last week the Senior Sports program took place with college teams participating in Badminton, Soccer, Clay shooting, Basketball, Football and Netball. Our teams were complimented on their behaviour and sportsmanship.

It was a pleasure to see them enjoying themselves and participating so positively with opposing team members. GSSC soccer team (main picture) with NDC players and the GSSC girls badminton team are pictured below with NDC girls.

As I have walked the corridors and visited classrooms, I have been inspired by the comprehensive opportunities available to extend our student’s interests and talents.

On Monday 24th May our college instrumental music students performed at the ‘Work In Progress’ Concert at Westside, Mooroopna.

This performance not only showcased the breadth of emerging talent, but also the outstanding skills of our teachers.

On Tuesday 25th May we had students from year 7 through to VCE performing in the first GSSC Dance Showcase at Westside. This performance involved Australian Ballet, Marrung and Punjabi dance groups.

The Media Arts students have been developing their skills in photography. A recent task was to take a series of images that represent the letters of their name. Students then present their photographs in a single image. The finished product by Tayem-Maree Billings 8N McGuire Campus, is pictured below.

Finally, the cycle for welcoming new students into our campus has begun, with the Year 6-7 Transition well underway. Our Open Night has taken place and enrolment forms are being collected at primary schools. Our 2022 intake of students will commence their secondary schooling at our state of the art facilities on Hawdon street.

"Like a hero with a Cape"

GSSC Captain Caitlyn Glasson spoke to approximately 200 Year 6 students and parents on what they might expect from secondary school, at our recent Year 6-7 Transition Night held at the McGuire Campus. Caitlyn recounted her own journey from her "home away from home" at Mooroopna Secondary College to her transition to Wanganui, her experience as a student leader and what new students might expect from their brand new school.
