MATHS in Term Two

In Mathematics, the Year Three/Four students have been focusing on Chance and Data, and Measurement and Geometry. Last week the students were hands on; conducting experiments to collect data, constructing graphs to display the data and then analysing what the data meant.

The students learnt the terminology associated with chance experiments; unlikely, certain, possible and impossible, and how we can change the likelihood of an event occurring. the students practiced tallying results of experiments and learnt how to construct an appropriate table. Incorporating ICT, the students learnt how to create a graph on iPads; including how to correctly label the axis. Lastly, the students looked at real-world situations where chance events occur, and where data is used. The students practiced reading data representations and discussing the results.

This week the students are investigating location and mapping; learning how to create and interpret grid maps, and using scales, legends and directions to understand basic maps. The students are conducting an investigation in which they will create a detailed map and write a list of accurate directions to lead their classmates to buried treasure.

For the remainder of the Term, the Year Three and Four students will be exploring the notion of symmetry; how it presents in nature and the built environment. The term will then conclude with a detailed focus on multiplication and division, and strategies to solve multi-digit equations.

Miss Tilley, Mrs Rowe and Miss Wright are so proud of the work being completed in Mathematics. The students have engaged with the curriculum, and in particular the hands-on activities that we have offered.

Staffing update

This week, Mrs Rowe has had foot surgery and is recovering now at home. For the remainder of this term, Ms Amy Roberts will be teaching 3/4A. Miss Bec Tilley is taking on the acting role of 3/4 leader in Mrs Rowe's absence.
