 Maths in Year 1!

Over the last fortnight the Year One students have been exploring various aspects of time.

Students sequenced daily activities and categorised them into morning, afternoon and night time groups. We ordered units of time from the shortest in duration to the longest in duration, for example seconds, minutes, hours, weeks and months. Students matched events to how long they would take to complete.

Students spent time making analogue and digital clocks which they used to help them work out o’clock and half past times. Students developed their understanding of the days of the week and focused on the terms yesterday, today and tomorrow. They created a spinning wheel to help them reinforce these concepts which they have brought home this week so they can use them each day.

Students use hoops, numbers and unifix blocks to create giant analogue clocks, and read and created a varying clock times. Groups of five unifix blocks were used to represent the five minutes between each number. This helps students to understand why we use 30 to represent the half hour on a digital clock.

Maths at home!

There are many ways you can help your child grasp the concept of time.

Having analogue and digital clocks around your home will help boost your child's understanding of how to read time. Placing an analogue clock close to a digital clock will help them to recogise the different ways the same time can be shown.

Using a family calendar to record the week's events will also be of benefit their understanding of how calendars work. Encourage your kids to count down to special events.

Get your child to use a daily timetable which shows important activities in the home. This might be when they have ballet or footy practise, bath time or when their favourite TV show is on.

Practising counting by 1s and by fives (to at least 60) will help them to understand time. Kids will need a good understanding of counting by fives  in the future when they are ready to read time to '20 past 1' or '10 to 3.'

Exposing your kids to fun, short clips about time will help support their understanding of time. Some of the clips which were shared with the students are below:
