MATHEMATICS

During Term Two our year five and six students have worked through many different areas of the Mathematics curriculum.

Topics within the Number and Algebra strand include:

Fractions - adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions (where the denominators are the same and different), placement on number lines, identifying  equivalent fractions, improper and mixed fractions.

Decimal numbers (tenths to thousandths) - ordering in ascending and descending values, placement on number lines,  greater than / less than & equal to, rounding and estimating decimals to closest amount,  decimal equations including multiplication of single and double digit decimal.

In Measurement, students have completed activities linked Area and Perimeter. They created their name on grid paper and calculated the Perimeter (outside length) and Area (space covered inside) of it. Worded problems backed up their learning with students completing real world measurement examples. Student examples of this task is showcased under 5/6B. During week 7, students will be investigating twelve & 24 hour time using both analogue and digital clocks, using time tables and calculating time elapsed between two events. Worded problems have been assigned for extension activities

In Statistics and Probability, students gathered two sets of temperature data over a period of 3 weeks. Students used the weather of Upwey and a second chosen destination (personal choice). During week 4, students used this data to develop and present a line graph which includes both data sets. In the 5/6A section, below you can view a selection of these graphs. This task was completed in both 5/6 classrooms.
