WHAT'S HAPPENING @ SCSC

Sports Academy and Fitness Sessions

What have our Sports Academy Students Been Doing?

Our Sports Academy students have settled into the year and their winter sports seasons. Skills continue to improve and it has been fantastic to see the athletes shine at school carnivals and within community and regional sport. Congrats to Soccer Sports Academy student Aisha Molloy (Year 7) who recently made the Geelong Rep Team for the U14 Girls Country Championship.

After setting the 'post-COVID foundations' during Term 1, students are now starting a more personalised approach to skill, strength and conditioning development.

Within Athlete Development classes, students are all currently working on sport specific plyometrics and their first personalised program for 2021. It has been so good to see the students' high levels of commitment, focus and motivation with their workouts.

During Sports Coaching sessions for AFL, Basketball, Netball and Soccer, the students also devote time each session to work on their choice of 'weapon or weakness' with extra skills coaching.

Many Sports Academy athletes have been attending Running and Speed & Agility sessions to further compliment their training with great results. Congrats to Ada Beasley and Sienna McCumber (both Year 8) who both had highly successful Districts Athletics Carnivals.

Sports Academy - Congratulations to our Athletes of the Week!

Year 8

Congratulations to our Year 8  Inter School Netball Winners!

On Tuesday 18th of May, 14 girls from Year 8 went to Geelong Indoor Netball and Basketball Centre to participate in Interschool Girls Netball.  There were two pools; each pool was a separate competition.  One of our teams played in each pool and each team played two games before the finals.  There were 12 schools in total that entered the competition and 9 of those had two teams.

There were great games played by both teams.  There was a lot of teamwork and resilience shown across the day.  The SCSC team in Pool A had super tough competition and despite amazing performances by all players, they did not make it through to the finals.  The SCSC team in Pool B also had some tough games, and like the other team, they worked together and played to their strengths and in the end, won the Grand Final against Matthew Flinders, 22 - 0.  Way to go!!

Also a big thank you to Ms Wood for coaching both teams and to Jenny for organising the uniforms for us to wear.  It was a great day and everyone gave it their all.

Year 8 Interschool Boys Football

On Tuesday the 18th of May, 20 students competed in the year 8 boys football competition. The boys started the day off slow, going down to a tall and strong Lara outfit. They played a much better team game in the second, losing  by two goals to the eventual grand finalist, Oberon. In the final game for the day, against Northern Bay, the boys hit their stride and won by a few goals. A well rounded team effort, especially by some students playing their first game of competitive football. A special mention to Riley Cotter, Tyson Smith and Joel Powers who were voted best players for the day.

Year 9

Years 9/10 Inter School Girls Football

A group of Year 9/10 girls recently competed in the Geelong regional football competition at Winter Reserve. The team had a mix of experienced footballers and those who had never played before. The girls showed a willingness to work together and while not winning a game they were able to improve in each game, going down to Belmont HS in controversial fashion by 5 points.

Highlights on the day included Abbey Pearce’s work in the midfield, the defensive general Charlotte Kerrison’s ferocious tackling, as well as the pace of Kijana Skerke and Kiara Chafer and their willingness to take the game on.

Year 9 Muay Thai

Our Year 9 students have been participating in an extra-curricular activity taking place at Boneyards Gym.

Year 9 Outdoor Education  - Rockclimbing & Abseiling

IDAHOBiT Day

IDAHOBiT Day (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia) was on the 17th May 2021 to bring awareness and improve our ability to include marginalised and vulnerable people in our community groups, business or social circles.

To help celebrate and promote the day, a group of students planned and put together activities for the day with support of our staff and fellow students.  A gold coin donation was provided for a pride dress day wearing brightly coloured clothing, as well as rainbow ribbons worn by our staff.  Funds raised went towards 'Switchboard', which is  a community-based not-for-profit organisation that provides a peer driven support service for LGBTIQA+ communities and their allies, friends, support workers and families.

Activities at lunchtime occurred on the hill and included face painting and a chalk mural, which students signed , as well as rainbow wings for people to pose with.

Victorian School Sports State Surfing Teams Final

After a year of no school surfing it was great to be back again at Jan Juc to try and once again to gain the Victorian School Sports Surfing Teams Titles for the Public School category. A competition that has been dominated by Wonthaggi Secondary College over the last decade, as well as the defending champs Dromana Secondary, we knew we would be up against it. Our mixed team included Joel Kerr, Asher Lens, Noah Clifford, Willis Droomer, Isla Huppatz, Ollie Lens and Remy Filer. The girls team included Emily McGettigan, Isla Huppatz, Jess McGettigan and Juliet Muscroft.

The girl's final started off slowly with conditions being inconsistent and the banks at Juc being pretty poor, which made trying to find 2 good waves in a short time very hard. Emily McGettigan was up first for us.  Emily got us off to a flyer with a huge one-turn on what appeared to be a nothing wave.  The judges absolutely loved it and rewarded Emily with an excellent score to really get the ball rolling for us. Next up was our power surfer Isla Huppatz, being the power surfer gives you the ability to double one of your two waves. Isla went out and put together a couple of really nice lefts to keep us in the contest.

With not much time remaining, we still had to get through 2 surfers to get back in on time and make sure we got the 2 bonus points for finishing within the 30 minute window. Both Jess and Juliet dug really deep for us. Juliet being the last surfer was desperately trying to scratch into anything she could, and then in the last 20 seconds she found a left and delivered a massive back hand snap on a critical section, she didn’t get in on time, but the score she produced on that last wave made up for the 2 bonus points we missed out on, and potentially that last wave being what got us across the line in the end. The girls coming away from the win, and now making it 4 state titles in a row for them.

The mixed team rolled out for their final straight after that. After another slow start it was Noah Clifford who really got the ball rolling for us.  Noah went out and in quick succession, got 2 really nice waves to get us back in the heat. Noah tagged in our power surfer Willis Droomer, for what would be a daunting situation for most surfers in a state final, was just another couple waves out at Juc for Willis.  He showed composure well beyond his age and once again delivered on his power wave jamming his way to a solid score on his back hand and keeping the dream alive for SCSC. With less than 30 minutes to go we still had to get through 4 surfers for a total of 8 waves! Asher Lens, Remy Filer and Ollie Lens all got through there waves in fairly quick succession, which gave Isla Huppatz 5 minutes on the clock when she got tagged in.

It was a really tricky situation for Isla because not only did we need her to get in on time, we also needed her to get at least 1 good score for us to be a chance. The ocean had been super slow all day and we knew it was going to be a big ask for her. With 3 minutes left Isla took off on one of the bigger waves of the day, the wave was maybe going to offer one section for her, she took off and drove straight off the bottom and into the lip, unfortunately the lip getting the better of her, luckily enough where she fell was still out the back and she was able to get back into position for potentially one more crack at it. With 90 seconds left Isla scratched into another solid left, well over head for her, the wave looking like a one-turn wave at most maybe, but she had to go! Isla took off and got one solid back hand turn in, a very clutch moment from her. She hit the beach with 45 seconds to go and got in across the line with 30 seconds to spare, she went beyond and above for what we needed her to do, not only did she put a solid score on the board but she also grabbed the 2 bonus points for us, which we would eventually find out would be enough to get us our second state title in 3 years!

A massive congratulations to all involved on the day, the support from the parents on the beach was incredible and created an amazing atmosphere. It's always a great event this one because its got that team element about it, which for an individual sport is very rare and to add to it the fact that you are competing for and representing your school just makes it all that much more special. A great achievement for the students and something I hope they can look back on in years to come and be super proud of themselves for. “Up the Surf Coastians…”
