STEM programming in the Library
This week the John Cain Library in association with the Design and Technology department are launching our 17 UN Goals Sustainability Collection.
A corner of the library has been developed to house a new collection of resources based around the 17 United Nations Sustainability Goals. The Sustainable Development Goals are a call for action by all countries – poor, rich and middle-income – to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. They recognize that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth and address a range of social needs including education, health, social protection, and job opportunities while tackling climate change and environmental protection.
Peter Murphy, head of Design and Technology has crafted a fabulous corner with tubs of books for each goal, a masthead on top of the shelves and bay ends with quotes from Greta Thunberg’s address to the UN last month. School Captain Marco Bellemo compiled an excellent list of resources pertaining to each goal for the library to consider for purchase. PDFs from Marco’s list now have QR codes for students and staff to scan to link to the documents.
We would like to thank Peter and Marco for their great work and we also welcome any suggestions of resources for this area of the library.
On Monday the John Cain Library launched the Thrive Grant Hackers Club with the assistance of the Design and Technology Department. Each Tuesday lunchtime in the library students and staff will be able to explore and create using modern technologies such as Sphero robots, Makey Makey squishy circuits, Makedo construction kits, Arduino programming and more. Students are encouraged to bring their device to download app to connect to some of these technologies. All students and staff are welcome. Please speak to Diana for more information.
This club has been introduced through the assistance of the Northcote Thrive Fund - Innovate Grants program.
The library will be open during lunch for Unit 1-4 VCE students studying for exams only.
All other year levels can access the library resources and printing/copying for the last 15 minutes of lunch time, during recess, or before/after school.
