Lions Youth of the Year

Rosie and Lucy

Northcote students shine

On Wednesday 9 October I had the pleasure of accompanying Year 11 students Rosie Thyer and Lucy Grage-Perry to compete to be the Youth of the Year representative for the Northcote Lions Club.

All schools within the local area are able to nominate and enter two students to represent their school. On the night, students had to have an interview as well as answer 2 impromptu questions and also give a 5 minute prepared speech in front of the audience.

For their prepared speeches, Rosie spoke about asylum seekers in Australia and Lucy spoke about gender inequality in sport. Both students did us proud and ended within a point of each other in the final results! It’s hard enough getting up in front of a crowd to do a speech, let alone to be given questions on the spot.

Lucy Grage-Perry received the highest score on the night and now and proceeds to the next stage (regional) in March next year as the representative for Northcote Lions Club.

One of the best parts of the night was the comradery Lucy and Rosie demonstrated with each other which can be clearly seen in the photo.

Between the topics of their talks, their speeches, their interactions with each other and the Lions club, they were demonstrating all the Northcote values.

Well done to both students.
