CYBER SAFETY AT COHR

DIGITAL SAFETY for class of 2020!

As students transition from primary to secondary school, it's time for a final word about living, learning and playing safely online.

Our Year 6 students were involved in a Digi-cursion on Monday 7th December.  This Digi-cursion was designed to start a timely conversation about digital safety and wellbeing for students transitioning to secondary school.  The Cyber Safety Project hosted a Zoom webinar for  graduating Year 6 classes of 2020 from across Australia.

The leap from primary to secondary school marks one of the biggest transitions in a young person's life. It's also a time when most young Australians get their first taste of digital independence, with access to a personal device, and join social networks.

Connecting online, especially with friends, can be fun but it's important to know how to be safe whilst doing so. To stay safe we must consider where we are online and who can see us in the different spaces we go online, and think carefully about the types of information we share.

This interactive digital workshop was designed to arm Australian Grade 6 students transitioning to secondary school with the tools, strategies and resources to thrive and stay safe in a hyper-connected digital world.

Through participating in this digital workshop, students will:

  • develop a clear understanding of the different types of spaces we go online
  • reflect on and learn from common mistakes made by young people on social media
  • learn how to take control of their digital safety and wellbeing through app and game settings
  • identify simple ways to be an upstanding digital citizen in 2021 and beyond
  • uncover ways to manage cyber bullying through the promotion of help-seeking strategies and resources.

Our Year 6 students watched this together in two groups.  We felt that this was a valuable session as they transition to secondary school and become more aware of the online world and the need to continue to be Responsible, Respectful and Positive online users.
