From the Team 1/2 Classrooms

Learning about each other through gathering data. 

It has been a wonderful start to the year in the Grade 1 and 2 classrooms where the students have enjoyed getting to know each other.

In the last two weeks, books have been read, words have been spelt, letters and stories have been written, games have been played and many questions have been asked, particularly in maths!

The students have been learning about each other and in maths this has been combined with learning about gathering data and graphing. 

As a whole class in the first full week of school, each class created a birthday graph.  Students decorated a cupcake and they wrote the date of their birthday and their name on their cupcake. These cupcakes where then gathered to create a classroom picture graph. Below are photos showing each classroom’s picture graph.

After these graphs were created, each class then created another picture graph or bar graph. Many new questions were asked and some of the things that students discovered were, which pets or animals were the most popular, what each other’s favourite foods were or how many siblings each person had.

The children had a lot of fun creating the graphs and the classroom birthday graph is a great way to ensure everyone’s birthday is celebrated!
