Duke of Edinburgh Camp

All systems were GO the minute restrictions eased enough to allow for school excursions. In just a few weeks, Miss Usher and Miss Aveling completed the required preparation and reconnaissance work, including performing the hike themselves, to launch the end of year Duke of Edinburgh camp in Cathedral Range State Park.

Armed with sleeping bags, snacks galore and a whole lot of ambition, our Year 9 students were bubbling with excitement as they gathered outside the library at 6.15am on Wednesday 9th December. Two mini-buses and a truck took us to Cooks Mill Campground, our home base for the night, before setting off for the first of two gruelling days of hiking. Our students met the challenge of lugging their full packs up steep and rocky inclines with quiet determination. Some were shocked by the strain, others found it thrilling to be taking measured risks and overcoming fears, but everyone was uplifted by the incredible views that appeared before them at the top of each climb.

Staff were so please with the extremely high-level communication and teamwork skills demonstrated by each student throughout the climb – our young people took it upon themselves to guide and encourage their peers and check in with those around them to ensure everyone was tracking well. To witness such a unified group of students after a disjointed and difficult year was very moving and promising – well done to you all on your commitment and personal success, not only during this hike but throughout the entirety of 2020.

A huge thank you to the staff that volunteered their time to assist the hike: Peter Vlahos, Krissi Friedli, Nathan O’Malley, Kerrie Hausler, Rachel Edwards, Marissa Lee, and of course the two dedicated DOE teachers, Kristi Usher and Claudia Aveling. Thank you, too, to all the families for your support throughout the year – the DOE course looked a lot different in the COVID world, and your organisation and perspective helped your young people with their individual Duke journey.

Prefect Conference

From the 9th-10th of December all of the 2021 Prefects were able to be a part of a Prefect Conference to plan and share our visions for next year. While contributing our ideas was a major part of the two-day event, we were also able to bond as a group through other fun activities.

We began the morning through learning how to enhance our public speaking and presenting skills and then took the train to Nunawading and to do some rock climbing. Everyone supported and encouraged each other while climbing, which allowed us to form trust and stronger friendships within the group.

After rock climbing, the whole group was split into teams to complete an Amazing Race. Each team was required to take photos at various places around Ringwood. Through teamwork and creative thinking, we had to follow clues and complete the race.

On the second day of the conference we began by having the pleasure of Aunty Irene came to teach us about the traditional owners of this land that we walk on and the different parts of her culture. We hope to further educate ourselves and have greater acknowledgement in our school community to the Wurundjeri and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We were so grateful for Aunty Irene to take the time out to see us and hopefully we can have her back soon.

As a group we bonded instantly, finding that all of our qualities together are able to create an awesome leadership team for next year. We are all really looking forward to continuing the RSC legacy for 2021 and can’t wait to work together to see our visions come to actions!
