YEAR 7 NEWS…

Welcome to our first College Connect Year 7 News!

We have started the year with a flying start! And we have many more exciting opportunities ahead for the Year 7 students. As always it has been a very busy start to the year with school photos, our first College assembly and Mass the beginning of Wednesday afternoon sport and sign ups for choir, netball, soccer and run squad all taking place.

The first few weeks at any new school can be exciting and scary all at the same time. Some students embrace it all with open arms and others are a little nervous with what is to come and where they need to be. I hope that now in week three your child is starting to feel more comfortable at St Mary’s and is receiving the love and care they require to engage in learning.

This week we had our opening College Mass for the year where the Year 7 students were officially welcomed. The Year 12 students also received their senior badges, and we recognised the wonderful academic results of our students for 2020. It was a lovely way to welcome the 2021 school year at St Mary’s.

Students participated in their first round of rotations for sport on Wednesday afternoon. I hope this was an enjoyable experience for your child and one they continue to develop in over the next 7 weeks.

The Year 7 assessment planners are now available on the College website under learning enrichment. I encourage students to record their due dates for assignments and exams in their diaries on the right-hand side using this document. Printing the assessment calendar off and placing it on the fridge at home is also another great place to remind your child when they have upcoming assessment. It also assists you to provide support and assistance to your child around assessment time. Please also note this can change with unforeseen circumstances due to school events that pop up so please check in regularly with the online document. I will also keep the students up to date with the document in community home form on a Thursday morning.

Last week you will have become familiar with the College Diary. This is an important organisational tool students will use to communicate between school and home. All homework and assessment should be recorded each day in the diary. If your child says they have no homework, then please feel free to ask to see the diary to check. Even if your child does not have homework, they should have recorded what they did for that lesson so revision can take place. At the end of each week, I ask that you take the time to look over your child’s diary for any teachers notes and the completion of homework. When you have done this please sign at the top of the diary to acknowledge it has been sited. It is your child’s responsibility to show you the diary to make sure this happens. All Year 7 students have been informed of this request and know to have it signed for Friday.

Next week we will be celebrating Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) and Ash Wednesday. This is the beginning of Lent, a time of preparation for Easter through prayer, penance, almsgiving, and repentance of sins. Students will do some activities in religious education lessons and fundraising for Caritas Australia as part of the Lenten season. I look forward to your support with some of our fundraisers this term.

A reminder that if you have any questions or queries be sure to contact your pastoral mentor as the first point of call. If the concern regards a subject area, please contact the teacher of that subject.
