Reading at Home

ENGLISH HOMEWORK
Staughton College has a continual focus of improving all students’ literacy capabilities. To support this the English department is asking all students in years 7-9 to complete 20 minutes of reading as homework, every day they have English. Research shows that reading an extra 60 minutes a week will expose students to tens of thousands of new words over the course of a year, and better reading comprehension means better results in every subject! Your help reminding students to complete this homework will be invaluable in building their literacy this year
JUST RIGHT TEXTS AND BOOK IN A BAG
As part of Staughton College’s Year 7-10 tutorial program, students are reading a ‘Just Right Text’ for 20 minutes in class every day. This ‘Just Right Text’ is just that – a book that is not too easy, and not too difficult. It’s also a book the student has chosen for themselves because they want to read it, to make tutorial time as engaging and productive as possible. Please can parents and guardians ensure that students have a book in their bag at all times, since they are required to read it every day. A quick reminder each morning before kids leave for school will ensure they are ready to read. There will also be prizes next term for students who consistently have a book in their bag!
