Ellen Sandell MP's visit

On March 11, 2020, Melbourne Girls’ College was privileged to welcome The Hon Ms Ellen Sandell MP, Deputy Leader of the Victorian Greens and former Director of the Australian Youth Climate Coalition, to the school. In light of the preceding International Women’s Day, the Deputy Leader presented an informative lunchtime talk on her experiences as a woman and mother in Parliament. In addition, she recounted her journey into the world of politics – from Melbourne University environment team member to one of Victoria’s most prominent Members of Parliament. Ms Sandell made poignant reflections on both the gender discrimination she has suffered as an MP and the positive change she has incited within the Parliamentary systems – such as successfully lobbying for Parliamentary breastfeeding facilities. As the first mother to hold a Victorian Parliamentary seat during her baby’s infancy, Ms Sandell became responsible for creating the maternity leave system for her colleagues and successors. Ms Sandell’s presentation persuaded many in the audience to consider entering politics, and was a very inspiring event. The presentation was recorded and hopefully will soon be available on the school intranet to view – if you missed the event, do not fear! The Humanities Team thanks the Deputy Leader for imparting her knowledge to the school community, as well as the staff of her electorate office and of MGC who assisted in the organisation of this event.
