Victorian Secondary Schools Philosothon

On Tuesday 13th August, a team of excited MGC students took part in the Victorian Secondary Schools Philosothon. The Philosothon is an annual philosophy competition contested by schools across the state. It challenges students to tackle big philosophical issues, such as free speech, the rights of Artificially Intelligent machines, environmental destruction, and the nature of time itself.

The team was comprised of Meredith Ross-James (year 11), Vivienne Carey, Esther Ellwood, Jasmin Gonzalez (year 10s), Jasmine Leung, and Alina Ivanova (year 8). While the team unfortunately did not emerge victorious, they gave a strong showing and impressed judges on the night.

Year 11 student Meredith Ross-James won the peer choice award. This award, given to the student who makes the most valuable contributions on the night, is voted on by all students participating in the contest. It is a testament to Meredith’s insights and thoughtfulness that she made such an impressive impact on her peers.

A special thank you to the Parents Association who generously contributed funding so that students could participate.
