Secondary News

Richard Clark

It has been a very busy week in the secondary school, starting with our mass for the feast of Our Lady, Help of Christians. Thank you to Miss Lauren Donnelly for organising this wonderful celebration.

On Wednesday afternoon, our Stage 5 students participated in a presentation from representatives of the Australian Defence Forces on possible career opportunities in the ADF.  Thank you to Mrs Anna Seccombe for organising this event.

Wednesday also saw five secondary students compete at the annual NSWCCC Touch Football Trials. Congratulations to Jack Montgomery, Will Caccianiga, Daniel Brown, Chloe Brazel and Zoe Maunder.

On Friday, twenty-five students travelled to Gunnedah, with Miss Lauren Donnelly, to compete at the Diocesan Cross Country.  Four students also competed at the tennis in the open division. Congratulations to the following students who were selected to compete at the 2017 NSWCCC Cross Country Championships. This is held at Eastern Creek on the 16 June. Daniel Brown, William Caccianiga, Damon Wilde, Blake McMillan, Paris Phillis, Piper Phillis, Chloe Makim, Cara Heinemann, Edward Montgomery, Jacob Berry and Brock Heffernan.

Sport is an important activity for our students and they are provided with many wonderful opportunities to compete in a range of sports. None of this would be possible without the commitment of Miss Anna Reed.  In providing these opportunities for our students, it is often necessary to organise buses to transport students, particularly for team events. Where teams are involved, travelling together helps to build camaraderie. An old proverb is ‘if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together’.  The cost of buses is another consideration. To keep these costs manageable, it is necessary that all participants travel together.

On Monday, Paige Burton, the Australian UN Youth Representative spoke to Stage 5 about issues facing youth.  Paige gathered information from our students regarding their concerns at personal, communal, national and global levels.

Assessments are well underway in most subjects. If students are looking for help or advice in completing assessments they are reminded that Mrs Seccombe and Mr Clark are available in the Learning Centre every Wednesday morning from 8.00 am.
