HOW ARE CHELTENHAM STUDENTS GETTING TO SCHOOL?
The Environment team has formed a partnership with the RIDE2SCHOOL network who support and promote active ways of getting to school, such as walking and riding bikes.
Students who get this incidental exercise through walking or riding( or taking public transport that involves walking) arrive at school more energised and ready for learning.
Also, with Australia’s childhood obesity rates being alarmingly high, we all need to be asking to kids to get active in any way we can!
Therefore, school surveys will done every now and then to take a ‘snapshot’ of how Cheltenham Students travel to school. See the graph below.
So, on Monday 26th of February, we found that nearly half our students were driven right to the gate!!
- 17% walked
- 11% rode their bikes
- 21% took public transport
We hope to increase our ACTIVE data by encouraging kids to ride or walk to school. We have a bike shed and around 50+ cyclists use it each day. If you need to get here using a car, perhaps kids can be dropped off around the corner, further way from school, so that they are getting more exercise and fresh air; a great start to the day!
