2018 Swimming Carnival

19th February

On a dark, gloomy morning, Cheltenham Secondary College students packed the spectator area of Oakleigh Recreation Centre. Although the weather wasn’t great to start the day, the students made the most of what tends to be a highlight of the year.  Oakleigh proved to be a fantastic venue to highlight student’s talents and the house spirit seen by all students was outstanding. The house areas were full of colourful costumes and house colours. Many of the students, but particularly our Year 12 students wore fancy dress outfits, which made for a fantastic view across the pool.

There were a number of individual students who jumped in the pool and achieved some great results in their events, which was fantastic to see. A highlight of the day was the novelty events which saw students do a t-shirt race, a peg scramble and a kickboard relay. These events were highly popular and got a number of students in the pool who were yet to get in and swim. The event was also very entertaining for spectators.

A big thank you to all the staff and student helpers (particularly the VCAL students) who came along on the day and were enthusiastic in all the jobs that were thrown at them.

A huge congratulations to the following students who performed the best in their age groups and will go on to represent the school in the Beachside Swimming Sports in a couple of weeks.

SENIOR BOYS CRICKET 2018

The Senior Boys Cricket was held over two stages the district level this year. The first match was a 10/10 at Bricker Reserve in Highett against Melbourne High School.

The format is 10 overs batting per team and bowlers cannot bowl more than two overs. So if you think 20/20 cricket is exciting, 10/10 is definitely even more thrilling with just about non stop action off every ball.

The game was held on Friday afternoon on the 9th of February. We won the toss and had a bat first. We batted steadily, without really getting going early on. A few early wickets saw Adam Bailes and Tom Moorecroft put together a useful partnership to steady the ship in the middle overs. Tom finished with a well made 46, which allowed us to reach 83 off our 10 overs.  When it was out turn to bowl, we fielded well and the bowlers kept it relatively tight. Adam Bailes was the pick of the bowlers however, he was ably supported by Ben Geleit, Zac Morgan and Tom McCarthy. Melbourne was always behind the required run rate and lost wickets steadily to finish on 73 after their 10 overs.  So, a commanding win in our first game.

Our last district game was against Albert Park Secondary College and we were able to switch to a 20/20 format.  Our Year 11s were away on camp so there were quite a few team changes from the team that defeated Melbourne. We had a bat first, finishing with 6/122, which was actually a good result as we struggled for decent partnerships. Adam Bailes opened and finished with a very well compiled 37, which was a great knock. Adam Martin gave us a glimpse of what he is capable of with an impressive 16, while Tyson Milne got amongst the runs with a valuable 44. So we finished with a good score, but certainly achievable if Albert Park batted well.  They started very strongly and soon had 50 on the board for no loss.  Adam Bailes was bowling quick and was rewarded by clean bowling there gun bat for 36. They steadied again and advanced to 1/75 off ten overs.

We were in a lot of trouble. However, a superb bowling effort with a steady stream of wickets left them needing 24 off the last three overs.  They were not quite up to the challenge, finishing on 7/114. Tom Morecroft bowled 4 sensational overs , only conceding 6 runs in a match winning effort. Fraser Hiddlestone bowled two tight overs for 10 while Tyson Murray ended up with 2/0 off his only over. Adam Bailes chipped in with 2 wickets in the 19th over which left them requiring 14 off the last.  A great effort by all the boys, resulting in Cheltenham being Beachside Division Champions for 2018.

Tuesday 13th February

Held at MSAC, our boys started off with an easy win over Elwood. A tough but close loss to Albert Park meant that we did not progress to the grand final, in which Albert Park played Melbourne High. Great sportsmanship and a fun time had by all. Well done to Rhys White as the Player of the day.

Also held at MSAC, our boys were firing and beat Elwood with ease. We nearly won the first set over Albert Park, only losing by two points. Unfortunately Albert Part stepped up in the second set, made it to the grand final and beat Yavneh. Player of the day was Oliver Diano with his amazing serves and ball control. Well done on a fun day for all who participated. Some great teamwork and sportsmanship in the end playing some practise games with some of the Melbourne High boys who were asked to come into the photo as our new friends!
