Primary News

From the Head of Primary

If parents were able to walk through the Primary School at the moment, they would see students learning about living things in Prep, mini-beasts in the Years 1/2 rooms, and design projects going on in the Years 3-6 classrooms. There is certainly much creativity being exhibited, with many cardboard boxes, assorted craft and recycled materials being used. Thank you for all the donations of recycled materials for the projects.

Academic Assessments: Next Monday 23 November, the Years 2, 4 and 6 students will be involved with Academic Assessments (formerly known as Allwell Testing). Very valuable data are gained from this process, which helps in planning for future learning. Students need to be at school on time as the testing starts promptly at 9am.

Class Placements: Class lists are nearly finalised. Early next week, parents will be posted a letter notifying them of their child/ren’s teacher/s and class/es for 2021. Students will also be told their classes for next year on Friday 27 November.

Transition Day: On Monday 30 November, students will spend the morning with their teacher and class for 2021. This will give both students and the teacher an opportunity to get to know each other a bit prior to the holidays.

Year 6 Graduation: The Year 6 students are about to start their dance lessons. They will be having an intensive series of lessons so that they are ready for their special day, which has been rescheduled for Tuesday 8 December. It is unfortunate that parents and other family members are unable to attend, but the aim is to still make it as enjoyable a time as possible for the Year 6 students.

Please keep all our students in your prayers during this very busy time of term.

God bless,

Glenys Bailey

Around the Primary Classes

Prep is learning about area. We had great team work to measure out the area of the veranda and the mat. We estimated which would be bigger. The mat needed 221 large kinder squares and the veranda used 136. Excellent measuring and counting Prep M!

After researching effective levers as part of their Integrated Studies unit, 'Innovation Creation', the students in Year 3/4T launched into the opportunity to design and create their own catapults using only popsicle sticks, rubber bands, plastic spoons and (of course) hot glue! Each design was unique and after some adjustments they were all successful. Some made their pom poms launch very high and others very far!

Mr Manning visits Year 3/4T to see their inventions

On Monday 16 November, Year 3/4T invited Mr Manning to visit their classroom to hear all about the helpful inventions they have designed and made models of. They had to identify a problem and then design and construct a solution to the problem that will help other people.

Austen and Jackson invented a collapsible home for people experiencing homelessness:

Quinn and Evan each created a machine to help eliminate pollution from the waterways:

Indiana made a watch for people to listen to a movie at the drive-ins if their car battery goes flat:

Emily made a model of a camera that notifies the car owner if their car is damaged and takes a photo of the registration of the offending car:

Keira wanted to help people with chopping up their food if they don't have the strength in their hands:

Patrick, Evan, Toby and Louis built a model of a machine they invented to help plant more seeds and grow trees to help the environment:

All of the models were made using recycled materials.

Stick insects are the most popular students in 3/4T!

Prickle and Dancer, our class pet stick insects, are very popular with the students who feed them fresh gum leaves and water each day. They are fascinating to watch and are getting so big! Louis, Josh and Eli, pictured here, are their biggest fans.

Into The Wild with Years 3/4 Students

Years 3/4 students were excited to finally go to the North Campus for a camp-style day! They met the cheeky goats, built huts, made damper and toasted marshmallows, completed some phenomenal team building activities and enjoyed pizza for lunch. A fun day was had by students and teachers alike!

Devotions with Prep M

The 5/6 students did an excellent job taking a class devotion in Prep M. They helped us to appreciate the amazing animals God has created.

1/2 B TEAR Australia Challenge

During remote learning in Term 3 for our Integrated Studies unit, Years 1/2 students learnt about water: where it comes from, researching questions they had about water and how to save water. During the holidays Mrs Bolden set the students a challenge to help around the house and "get paid" for those jobs, but the money earnt was to be donated to TEAR Australia. Years 1/2 students did a fantastic job and raised $105. We were able to purchase a toilet and safe hand washing for others who don't have that luxury. TEAR Australia were very thankful for our donation and wrote us a note explaining their thanks and a certificate. Well done Years 1/2 students.

Visitors in 1/2B

It's lovely to see our native visitors in the school grounds. Thank you to the students who give them the space they need.

These beauties were placed back over the fence away from little fingers and feet. Thanks Mr Svigos for showing our class!
