Term 3 was a very busy one. It marked the completion of the preliminary course for Year 11 - they now commence their HSC courses as Year 12 students. The last two weeks of term 3 were particularly stressful for Year 11 as they completed their final examinations. I was very pleased with how well Year 11 handled themselves during this time – organising study schedules, displaying good study habits, looking out for their friends and really trying to do their best. The exams provide an indication to students about what they know and what they need to work on. The exams also allow teachers to identify areas of strength and areas for improvement so they can adapt their future lessons based on this.
These exams have also enabled students to make study notes and receive feedback that will help them in next year’s exams. Students will receive their Year 11 ROSA grades and final Year 11 Reports in a few weeks. After this, they may decide to drop one of their subjects as only 10 units (5 subjects) are required to attain the HSC. This will involve an application form where students list all of their subjects and exam marks, an explanation as to why they would like to drop a particular course, a signature/approval from a parent, and an interview with myself. This is to ensure that students are making the BEST decision for their HSC performance, not just the EASIEST decision. Sometimes it is best for students to retain all 12 units (6 subjects) so that they have a course to fall back on. It is only useful for students to drop to 10 units if they need the time to work on other subjects, particularly subjects requiring practical or performance work. Please feel free to contact me if you wish to discuss the best option for your child.
It was wonderful to see so many students apply for the position of school captain, with 26 students putting themselves forward – the most ever!! I think this says a lot about Year 11 as a cohort who really want to make a difference in the school and community. I look forward to working with Max Krol, and Violeta Bozanic as School Captains, Brendan Pham and Tina Pham as Vice Captains and the SRC – Renae Prasad, Sophia Kouch, Jasmine Quach, Bilal Shah, Zachari He and Edwin Tarawali.

I would also like to congratulate the following students for applying for the role:
Lisa Al Razak, Ripel Atroushi, Youna Bashir, Stevana Bogicevic, Maria Jabro, Gabriella Porecca, Anna Tien, Amanee Wehbe, Anika Yahyavi, Trinity Le, Layth Mohammed, Dylan Mustafa, Zain Naeem, Aidin Sadikovic, Ilhan Dursun and Joseph Hermiz.
Lastly, I would like to extend my very best wishes to Christina Kennedy as she ended her time at Cecil Hills High School last term, before beginning in a different role at Canley Vale High School. I have had the absolute pleasure of working with her over the past 5 years as she has guided, mentored and supported the year group through their schooling life. I feel so privileged that myself, Jenny Green and Mrs Kennedy have been with this year group since their Year 6 orientation. We have watched them grow into young adults and have enjoyed working as one. I know that Canley Vale High School is very fortunate to gain such an intelligent and compassionate person and that she will be truly missed by students and staff.
I would like to welcome Carol Campbell into the role of Year Adviser. She will be working alongside Jenny Green in supporting students through their final year of high school and I look forward to also working with her.
I extend my thanks to all of our families for your continued support of the school.
I hope the holidays provided time for you to spend together and that students had some time to rest before an action-packed Term 4.
