Language & Culture Program

Kii, Deadly TPS community, biladu-njan wat/how are you all? And in the words of my Yawuru language...Ngaji gurrjin/Hello everyone!

NAIDOC Week was rescheduled this year and held early in November. We had to celebrate it in a different way, with students participating in a variety of activities throughout the week.

The week was started off with a revamp of the fence woven flag.

In Language & Culture classes, students continued to deepen their understanding of the NAIDOC theme - ‘ALWAYS WAS. ALWAYS WILL BE.’ Through the Wurundjeri story ‘The Creation of Birrarung (Yarra River) and Port Phillip Bay, and the Bunwurrung story that tells about the filling of Nairm (Port Phillip Bay), students have been learning about how knowledge of what generations of Kulin Nation people have experienced and witnessed over the ages with the flooding of the rivers around the Melbourne region and the filling of the bay, have been embedded into these two stories, and is further proof of First Nation people’s longevity of time and place on this continent. Students in years 3 - 6 are working on creating scraperboard illustrations for the Bunwurrung story, some of which will be chosen for a class storybook resource. Here are some examples:

During NAIDOC Week, each class also got to work on writing up their own Acknowledgement of Country. Once these are completed, we will collate all of them and use a different one at each of our school events. Some of these Acknowledgements can be found in class newsletters. Included below is Grade FA’s AoC:

Another activity involved all classes going for a walk to learn about the Koorie Mural on St Georges Road. Some photos have also been included in class newsletters.
