We are now able to reveal our Year 12's Major Projects and a full report will appear next issue.

Food Tech

On Friday Year 9 Food Tech treated staff and students to a genuine 'food van' experience at the College.

Take away meals were available at break B including Sushi, Fried Rice, Pork Dumplings, Chicken Parmi burgers, Loaded Fries, and Margarita Pizza.  Thanks Year 9 and Mrs Healey for providing such great service!

HSIE

Mrs Cherie Stoessel

Our year 10 students are doing fantastic work on their Historical Investigation Projects with students developing great inquiry questions on a broad range of really interesting topics.  Some examples of questions across the classes include:

  • Why did the Japanese Imperial forces, led by Mitsuo Fuchida, bomb Darwin in 1942?
  • What was the significance of the [Russian] 588th bomber regiment fighting in World War 2 and how did it change the [view] of women fighting in war?
  • Why was JFK assassinated and what leading events happened because of his death?
  • What role did fear and hysteria play in the Salem Witch Trials?
  • What changes in society have preempted the evolution of currency?
  • How has public opinion on the notion of war changed since the beginning of the 20th century?
  • How has war sped up innovation?
  • What was the significance of tanks being used during world war 1?

Teachers of year 10 classes have been really impressed with the overall enthusiasm for the projects shown by students and are keenly waiting on seeing the results of the projects.

Mathematics

Probability and the Year 9 Casino

In Year 9, the Maths syllabus covers the topic of probability. Students look at the chances of things occurring. It is an excellent opportunity to teach young people the reality of gambling odds. The Year 9 5.2 Maths Casino was a huge success last Friday. The Casino made a huge profit of 609 counters! Each punter started with 10 counters, and most of them lost them all. Let's face it, overall, the house always wins.

Fast approaching this term is our Lifesaving Program for Years 7 and 8. In Week 9 of this term all Year 7 and 8 students will participate in a Lifesaving Program tailored towards their swimming and survival skills. During this program some students will have the opportunity to gain a number of swimming awards including the Royal Lifesaving Bronze Star and the Bronze Medallion qualification.

Some of our Year 9 and 10 students are in the process of training to deliver this program later in the term. An information note from the college will shortly follow outlining all requirements. In  preparation we ask that all students have appropriate swimwear (full pieces preferred), rashies, sunscreen, towel, plastic bag (for wet clothes), school hat or cap and for students completing the higher awards you will need a long sleeve top and long pants for lifesaving scenarios.

If you have any questions about the program please feel free to contact the college or your child’s PDHPE Teacher.

Science

Mr Daniel Fittler

Year 7 students are wrapping up their understanding of the solar system. They have been looking at the cause of the different phases of the moon and understanding how the tilt of the earth causes the seasons. Our Year 8 students have been conducting their own investigations. In their experiments they have been trying to find the answers to questions like;

  • Which brand of battery lasts the longest?
  • What are the ideal conditions for mung bean seeds to germinate in?
  • How can you make a pendulum swing so that each swing takes 1 second?
  • How do you change the strength of an electromagnet?
  • Which brand of paper towel is the strongest?

In their experiments they have come up with excellent ways of testing these ideas and the results that they are getting are sometimes surprising.

Students in year 9 and investigating electricity production and determining how energy can be changed into useful forms as efficiently as possible. Year 10 students are working on understanding climate change and how decisions that they make can positively impact global systems.

VET (Vocational Education and Training)

A number of Year 10 students have recently undertaken Work Experience.  Work Experience

is a valuable opportunity for students to sample the realities of working in an industry in which they have an interest as a possible future career. It is also provides prospective employers with a chance to observe a prospective employee before they take them on.

It is not uncommon for students who show enthusiasm and true commitment to be offered

a traineeship or apprenticeship by an employer. Due to Covid restrictions, Work Experience was cancelled as an event for the whole of Year 10. However, it has been permitted for individuals on a case-by-case basis.

Stephanie Hough, who wants to pursue a career as a veterinary nurse, recently undertook a week of Work Experience with North Hill Veterinary Clinic.

**STOP PRESS - Following Stephanie's work experience efforts, she has been offered a traineeship from North Hill Vet Clinic. Well done Steph!
