Trustworthy

Our whole school theme this term is trustworthy, under the umbrella 'Stand' of our motto Learn Stand Give Fly. We have been learning about why trust is important, and how breaking trust can affect us and our relationships with others. Here are some of the key messages we'll be exploring this term:

  • Honesty matters: Being trustworthy means always telling the truth, even when it's hard. People trust you when you are honest.
  • Keep your promises: It is important to do what you say you will do. This shows others they can count on you.
  • Be a good friend: Being trustworthy makes you a good friend. Friends can trust you with secrets because they know you won't tell anyone.
  • Take responsibility: Being trustworthy means admitting mistakes and making things right with others. It's okay to make mistakes, but it's important to fix them.

These themes come up on a daily basis in my work with children, as I'm sure they do with you at home! Children often struggle to tell the truth, especially if they are worried they will get in trouble. At school, we set very high expectations about honest conversations, and children learn through experience that they feel better after taking responsibility for their actions. Children know when they come to speak to me I want the whole truth, and definitely not what I call a 'slippery' truth!

Every Monday this term all classes will be learning about trust. This week we learned the expression, 'when the cat's away, the mice will play', and linked this to the ways we expect children to act when their teacher is not watching. Please ask your children what being trustworthy means to them, and talk about ways they can show they are trustworthy at home and at school. Thank you!

ANZAC Day service

We were proud to have our school represented at Uraidla's ANZAC day service. Thank you to Lucy Wildy and Lucas Hosking for laying wreaths and raising the flag at the service to show our respect for those who served.

Wheels Day

We had so much fun last Friday at Wheels Day. Thank you to the Senior class who organised the animal theme and asked children to come dressed as an animal or decorate their bike or scooter as an animal. There were so many terrific costumes; it was really hard for our SRC executives to decide!  The best part of the day was riding around the town oval. Congratulations to Benji Staniford who rode the furthest -25 laps of the oval!

New 'Sensory Room'

This week we were pleased to launch our new sensory room at school. The sensory room is a place where kids can go with an SSO when they need help with self-regulation outside of the classroom. This fits well with our teaching of the Zones of Regulation. For example,

when students are in the yellow zone, they may need to find ways to help them feel calm and ready to learn. Each classroom has a variety of sensory tools children can choose from (eg wobbly stools, fidget tools, mindful colouring), but the sensory room is a quiet space with low lighting, comfortable seating and away from others, where children can really focus on settling their minds and bodies, guided by an SSO. Feel free to come and have a look any time! It is located in the front office area near Troy's office.

Uraidla Primary School 'students' for the day!
Uraidla Primary School 'students' for the day!

Today students dressed like teachers, and the staff surprised everyone by dressing up as students. What a hilarious day! Can you guess who these students dressed up as? 😀

Have a great fortnight everyone!
