Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden

Firstly, we truly do thrive in a team culture here at Kingswood Primary School. The Stephanie Alexandra Kitchen Garden program cannot run without our amazing volunteers! Thank you for all your support this term.

A huge shout out to the Ates Family for your help with the hens over the Easter term holidays. Hopefully all is quiet in the chicken coop over the next few weeks.

Autumn is upon us! Garden classes have watched the summer crops die away, exposing the last of the produce these plants have to offer. Cherry tomatoes, cucumbers and zucchinis have all been harvested. I think it is fair to say we don’t want to see any more of these until next summer! These crops have been extremely successful this year.

Last spring, we trialled netting two of our fruit trees. Who can forget the delicious plums that were harvested at the start of the term. This week it has been apples. There is nothing quite like a fresh, juicy, sweet apple picked from the tree. The pleasure and amazement on the students faces from eating a freshly picked apple was delightful to watch.

With the garden beds cleared by the magnificent help of 4C, 5B and 2S, we have been ready to plant this week.  Students have planted silverbeet, garlic, onions, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, beetroot and wombok. And they have eagerly requested to plant carrots! So we have been planting carrot seedlings and seeds. We are curious to see what sort of shaped carrots we end up harvesting in 12 -18 weeks’ time.

In other exciting news in the garden, we have 4 new hens! They are 18 weeks old and very friendly. They are already laying eggs, and students are happy to watch the new interactions with our girls.

Wishing everyone a relaxing and safe break. Thank you for all the support and I look forward in seeing you all next term.

Happy Gardening!
