Year 8 student Alex Nikolarakos recently competed in the School Sport Victoria State Swimming Championships.
Alex competed in the 15-16 year old Boys 50m Freestyle Multi Class event at MSAC on Friday 28 April and secured fifth place in the state. His performance is a testament to his willingness to give things a go; he stepped up to the challenge and proved that with determination and effort, anything is possible. His achievement is a proud moment for himself, his school and his family, and he deserves all recognition for his accomplishment.

I was very excited to reach the state final. I used to do swimming classes but had to stop in 2020 when COVID closed all the swimming centres. I did not go back to swimming lessons, and I really missed it. I was excited to swim at the competition, and proud to represent my school. There were a lot of people there, cheering for the swimmers. I felt good having my Dad and Jarrod come watch me swim.
I was a bit nervous to use the swimming block, so I dived from the side. I was tired and cold when I reached the end, but I was so excited! It was a fun day!

Stepping up to compete on the wider sporting stage can be daunting and takes some courage and self-belief. Alex does not have a history in competitive swimming, and can be very proud of his attitude in taking on the challenge. He was up against swimmers who compete on a regular basis, but he did not let this interfere with his determination to do his best. It was great to watch Alex earn such an excellent result!
