As part of VCE Unit 1 Art Making & Exhibiting, students recently visited the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) to view the Melbourne Now exhibition.
Melbourne Nowfeatures over 200 contemporary art and design works across all three levels of the NGV Australia and showcases the diversity and creativity of Melbourne's art and design scene. The exhibition encompasses a wide range of artistic mediums, from fashion and jewellery, painting, sculpture, architecture and ceramics to video, performance and printmaking.
During the excursion, the students attended a lecture by NGV Education staff, who provided insights into the ideas explored by the artists as well as their working methods.
They also discussed the presentation of the artworks in the gallery.
Students also had the opportunity to look through Top Arts, an exhibition of outstanding student artwork from the previous year's VCE Art and Studio Arts students.
The visit to the NGV was a great opportunity for the students to engage with artworks directly, and experience art forms including installation, sculpture and video in person.
Some of them tried out Sean Gladwell’s XR (extended reality) ‘out of body’ experience where the students had to lie down wearing VR headsets. Others had fun inside the installation Swarming by James Lemon. This ultraviolet hive of activity posed the question,
‘What is it like to be a bee?
After viewing Melbourne Now, the students will now select three artworks to research in more detail. They will produce an ‘Exhibition Room Sheet’ for their Outcome 3 School Assessed Coursework (SAC), in which they present information about the artworks for a proposed exhibition.
