Melbourne Theatre Company Youth Ambassadors Program 

Congratulations to Sophia Sais, who has been selected as the Melbourne Theatre Company (MTC) Youth Ambassador for Wheelers Hill Secondary College. Each year, MTC accepts only 1 nomination of a Year 11 student from each school, and then shortlists a group of 15 students from 15 schools who are passionate and enthusiastic about the Theatre Industry. We are so proud of Sophia being chosen to represent our school in this very small, selective program. Sophia has written below about the program, her application process and her involvement in it so far.  

Sophia will also have the privilege of seeing 10 MTC Productions throughout the year, these include:

• Bloom – A New Australian Musical

Theatre Studies Teacher 

Each year a group of Year 11 students with a love for theatre are selected as Youth Ambassadors for the Melbourne Theatre Company, where they get to experience a year-long program with an up-close look into professional theatre. The Youth Ambassadors meet every month with the Melbourne Theatre Company staff and artists and are given the opportunity to talk about theatre with people who share the same passion. 

The application process involves answering questions about your own experiences with theatre. Some of these questions include topics such as, what you like about theatre, your involvement in it and why you would like to participate in the program. If you’re really passionate about theatre, these questions are not hard to answer! 

Our first meeting was held on 4th April. We were introduced to the Melbourne Theatre Company headquarters and staff, followed by a tour of the enormous building. We were privileged to see where costumes, sets and props are made and where the actors rehearse for productions. After learning how the shows are put together, we walked to the Southbank Theatre to watch Bernhardt/Hamlet. The play was incredible and we were so lucky to be able to have a Q&A with the actors to end our exciting night!
