The term has started and the Grade 6 Interschool sport is starting this Friday 28th April.

We wish them luck and hope they have a great outcome.

Foundation news

We have been very impressed with the way all the Foundation students have settled back into routines at school. They have remembered the class rules and focused well on their learning tasks. In Maths, we have been learning to find one more and one less than numbers to 10 and beyond. On Monday, we created holiday snapshots and the children shared all the exciting activities they participated in throughout the break from school. We are focusing on retelling stories in Reader’s Workshop. Our new Inquiry and Science Topic is ‘Weather In My World.’ The Term 3 Newsletter will give you further details about what we are learning throughout May and June.

Year 3 News

Melbourne Museum Excursion

On Monday, April 3rd the Year 3 classes went on their first excursion for the year to Melbourne Museum. The main focus of the visit was to explore the First Peoples exhibit and learn more about the significance of country and place to Victorian Aboriginals, and how life has changed since the Europeans first arrived. We also enjoyed the Milarri Garden walk and Forest Gallery discovering some flora and fauna native to our land. After that we visited the Melbourne Story and 600 Million Years exhibitions, then heading to the Carlton Gardens Playground for a picnic lunch and play.

A huge thank you to all the parent helpers and other staff members for coming along and making this first excursion a success!

Year 5 News

Year 5 Virtual Reality Space & Sovereign Hill

Year Five students have started their author study on Chris Van Allsburg who is well known for writing Jumanji, Polar Express and Zathura which were all made into movies.

The students have also started learning about Earth’s place in space. They will be enjoying a virtual reality experience by entering the International Space Station as an astronaut. If parents get a chance on the weekends to ride the St. Kilda to Port Melbourne scaled model of the universe which starts at the skateboard park, this would be a brilliant opportunity for students to truly understand the scale of the universe.

The highlight of this term will be our excursion to Sovereign Hill where students will get the chance to undertake gold panning and discover how people lived in the 1850’s. Students will be allowed to bring $10 to $15 to spend during the day. Both 5A and 5B will need two parents to come with us to Sovereign Hill on Friday 2nd of June. If you are free please let us know via an email.

Looking forward to another exciting term!

Education Sub-Committee

Dear OPS Community, What was that I heard you ask? "How can I get involved in making Ormond Primary School an even more engaging and stimulating place to learn and thrive?" So glad you asked! The Education Sub-Committee is where you can bring your passion for our school community, your skills in collaboration and your drive to make things happen instead of just talking about it.  In 2023 our major focus will be:

  1. Developing an OPS Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP)
  2. Exploring how we can empower all members of the OPS community to be welcoming, inclusive and supportive of the Neurodivergent students who bring so much to our school.
  3. Developing learning opportunities for the wider community to engage with what happens in the classroom, such as showcasing the AMAZING work our students and teachers do. Our results are great, we need to celebrate this!!

We will be meeting on the Tuesday in the week before School Council at 6pm – 7pm in the conference room at OPS.

The meeting dates are as follows:

Tuesday 9th May.

13th June

11th July

8th August

5th September

10th October
