POSITIVITY AND RESILIENCE DAY

THE ASTONISHING AL-PAL

Year 7 Students had an exciting visit from Alan Sloggett, also known as Al-Pal the magician. He impressed the students with his amazing bird appearances and disappearances and with his incredible balloon skills crafting animals such as giraffes and poodles. To finish, he called one brave year 7 (Aaron) up to get his head chopped off with a guillotine! Many year 7s doubted Aaron would live, but the astonishing Al-Pal sawed through Aaron’s head without any ambulance needed. The year 7s were truly amazed. After the show we enjoyed a hot dog for lunch.

During the day the students also had to make a list of what was positive and what was negative about their first term at Kew High. They were to make either a PowerPoint or a short video based on what they had written down. The reviews from the year 7s were mainly good, with only a few little problems that needed to change on their behalf.

AN INSPIRATIONAL TALK

A speaker, Hugh Van Cuylenburg, came to give the Year 7s an inspirational talk that they will never forget. His journey to India was truly enriching and opened up all our eyes to how others live compared to us. Afterwards it made us really grateful for what we have in our lives. He told us many stories that were truly unforgettable.

My personal favourite was about a boy who had basically had a pretty bad life, yet was so positive about the things he did have. It really opened up my eyes, because he was so grateful for things that we would just throw away. The wonderful thing about how Hugh came to talk to us was how he didn't just talk about really raw topics such as how young children are working for big organisations and potentially getting nothing out of it. He came to talk to us about some things that made us laugh, which is great because it balanced things out. One story that made me laugh very hard was about how when they had to get cultural training he thought that his instructor looked like Yoda from Star Wars.

Overall Hugh enlightened us and told us things that made us have mixed emotions. He told us a lot about life in India and we are so thankful he came. Hugh gave a wonderful speech that made us appreciate life more than we did before.
