Volume and Capacity!

The Year Preps and Year 1s have been busy learning about Volume and Capacity. After reading the picture story book Alexander’s Outing by Pamela Allen and learning about how the characters in the story used water to help Alexander out of a hole, it was time to do the same.

Firstly, we predicted which containers would hold the least amount of water and the most . - Eklavya

We had to count how many cups of water it took to free our ducks. - Laura

The capacity of the smallest container was 23 cups with the largest being 35 cups. - Arvin

We also had a go at experimenting with sand, rice and unifix blocks.

Procedures!

The Junior students have also been learning about the purpose and features of Procedural texts. So far we have learnt, how to build a sandcastle, make delicious fairy bread and yummy lemonade. We can’t wait to find out what we will be doing/making next!

Year 2/3

This week the Year 2/3 students have been learning about Remembrance Day and why we remember the soldiers who fought for us.

Jacob - To remember all the people who fought in the wars.

Fortunato - They fought for our freedom.

Year 3/4      The Melbourne Earthquake

I was asleep on the bed and then I woke up. And then a little bit later, the earthquake happened. I felt it a little bit and then, I woke up my sister and told her that the house was shaking and we zoomed over into the living room and only a corner was shaking. We were terrified because things might have collapsed.  When we came out of our apartment room, we saw that one of our neighbors had already run out of his apartment room. Our other neighbors were still in their apartment room. Then everybody came out of their apartment except for one other neighbor who stayed inside. My apartment is earthquake proof and that is why we didn’t feel it that much.     By Bhavin

My dad and I were playing hide and seek when the earthquake happened. I was hiding in my nanny’s wardrobe and my dad was trying to find me. While I was sitting on the floor in the wardrobe, covered by a woolly coat, everything started to shake. I could hear the windows rattling, and thought my neighbors were being noisy. My dad called for me to come to him but I thought he was cheating, so I kept hiding. He called for me again, saying the shaking is an earthquake. I ran out to him, and we stayed together till the shaking stopped. I wasn't scared about the earthquake. My dad said he has not felt an earthquake in ten years.     By Ishe

When the earthquake happened I was at home playing games, when suddenly it started to shake. I thought it was a construction site next to me. But it kept happening for 3-5 seconds. Then it stopped! I didn't know what was happening so I asked mum and she said it was an earthquake. My dad thought it was a joke since we didn't have any tremors since 10 years ago. But when he turned on the T.V. it said that the earthquake that we just had a minute ago, just measured at 5.9!.Then I thought to myself that I was lucky I survived that earthquake. Then I went to check on my brother to see if he was ok but he was just fine playing on his Ipad on a bean bag.     By Chen

I was in the toilet when the Melbourne earthquake happened.  I thought a monster truck smashed into our house. I could see the rod of the blind banging into the wall. I felt like I was being pushed up. I felt excited but a little bit scared also. I didn’t realize what it was until my mum and dad told me. When my dad told me where the epicentre was, I couldn't believe that we could feel it so far away. After the earthquake happened, I asked my mum and dad what happened. And we put on the TV and it was on the news.     By Glendon

During the holidays Melbourne had an earthquake. I was at my nonna’s house with Sienna and my cousin. We were in the car and on our way to the shops when we felt the car shaking. My nonna thought it was me, Sienna and my cousin shaking the car and she told us to stop. We did not realize it was an earthquake until my auntie phoned and told us. When we found out about the earthquake I felt nervous and scared because I thought it might happen again.     By Michael

On September 24th 2021, there was an earthquake! With a magnitude of 5.8 or 6.0. When the earthquake happened I was sitting on top of my bed and it felt like the bed was a swing! When we got to the stairs the earthquake had stopped. But it was really terrifying since Victoria never has earthquakes!     By Sheen

I was on the couch where my PS4 is and I was watching  Rick and Morty. Then it started shaking everywhere, my shelves started shaking and moving around and my little table was moving. I thought it was the wind but it was an earthquake. It made me feel a bit scared and fun because I've never felt an earthquake. When it was over I went outside and dad told me that it was an earthquake and I said “I thought it was the wind blowing on the house”.     By Zane

When the Melbourne earthquake happened I was asleep and it woke me up. I could hear the windows rattling and my door suddenly slammed shut. I could also feel my bed shaking and I felt worried and confused. I didn’t realize what happened until my mum told me it was an earthquake. I was shocked when they told me that we actually had an earthquake. I wasn't scared but I was very surprised. Later on I heard the news on the TV that it was the largest earthquake ever recorded in Melbourne. I even saw videos of the buildings damaged and had cracks on the wall. In the shops some of the items fell from the earthquake. Luckily there was not a big damage and loss of life with this 5.9 magnitude earthquake. This earthquake was my first ever experience that ever happened in my life.     By Yash

When the earthquake started, I was in my bedroom, asleep. A few minutes later, I started to feel shaking, so I woke up a bit confused. Then when I stood up, I heard rumbling from what I think was pipes. It was a bit loud too. Then I found out it was an earthquake. I felt pretty surprised as it was my first time going through one and I never thought I would come across one. It was a pretty tiny one as it didn’t last very long, to me at least. Then, I went to my parents to tell them what had happened. We all went to the hallway of our apartment and some of our neighbors came and we had a bit of a chat about the earthquake and we went back inside. We sat down and watched the news to see if anything about the earthquake came up. And that’s what happened. Luckily, nothing was damaged and everything was fine.     By Hansvi

A Walk in the Park

So great to have everyone back at school. The students didn't take long to get back into the swing of things, but we did start off each day in a slow, relaxed way. The senior students have been enjoying catching up informally before school and walking with each other before the learning begins. It's been a great way to catch up with each other informally, as well as get in some much needed exercise!

Grade 5/6 Volume and Capacity

In Mathematics, the Grade 5/6s have been exploring Volume and Capacity. We took advantage of the beautiful weather earlier in the week and went outside for our lessons. In small groups, the students received three containers each and had to estimate what the capacity was for each container. They then had to fill the containers up with water and measure to see how accurate their estimates were. We then compared the capacity of the containers to popular items we might see at the shops, like milk bottles and water bottles. Through these activities the students were able to connect volume and capacity and their units of measurement. Next week we will continue to explore Volume and Capacity and look at converting between units of measurements like litres and millilitres.
