Mad About Science Incursion

Our Inquiry this term has been ‘Beneath Our Feet’. We have been exploring the science of Geology which is the study of the Earth, what it is made of and how it has changed over time.

Our incursion’s focus was to  investigate different types of rocks and learn how fossils are our window to the history of Earth billions of years ago.

Here are some photos of the students being geologists.

Here's what the students thought...

  • I learnt rocks can be magnetic: Alex
  • There are 3 different types of rocks: Kevin
  • I learnt that dinosaurs died when a meteor hit the Earth: Elina
  • Some rocks can turn into liquid” Andyle
  • I learnt some rocks can glow under UV: Christina
  • I learnt there the names of rocks igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic: Raff
  • I learnt there are crystals in some rocks: Kosal
  • I will remember we made a fossil: LJ
  • We tested how rocks taste: Thot
  • Different rocks have different features: Krishay
  • There are many layers to the Earth: Nirvair
  • Rocks are made in different ways: Angelika
  • Rocks can float: Dina
  • I got to taste a rock: Brianna
  • Rocks with bubbles are form a volcano: Samuel
  • We tested rocks to see if they were magnetic: Carly
  • There are different types of gems: Hollie
  • I learnt the difference between rocks and gems: Liam
  •  I learnt some rocks taste salty: Amelia
  •  Most fossils are found underwater: Rivessha
  • We learnt how the Earth was formed: Devorah
  • We tested rocks to see what they do: Chloe
  • I learnt that magma is a rock made from lava: Advika
  • I learnt how to classify rocks: Keziah
  • “We learnt about fossils and how they were formed.” - Isabella
  • “We sorted out the properties of the rocks. Some were salty and some were magnetic.” - Eva
  • “We looked at interesting rocks and tested how some rocks reacted to light, magnets and vinegar.” - Ryan
  • “At the beginning, Leanne showed us a timeline of things that happened to Earth.” - Jessica
  • “We saw what different rocks can do, like they can fizz when we put them in vinegar and some glow when we put a torch on it.” - Dinuki
  • “We learnt about the different types of events in the Earth’s timeline.” - Alexander
  • “We learnt about the different types of rocks. There are two types of igneous rocks.” - Nethuli
  • “There are different types of rocks. Some are salty, some can float and some can glow.” - Kristy
  • “I made my own fossil with sand, water and plaster.” - Jayden
  • “I saw many events on the timeline of Earth even when dinosaurs became extinct.” - Steven
  • “One of the rocks we looked at was very salty.” - Tina
  • “We made our own fossil plaster. We did many tests on rocks to see what type of rock it was.” - Yilong
  • “We tasted salt rocks and made a shell fossil out of plaster.” - Charlize
  • “I learnt that rocks can have different properties like coal is magnetic and igneous can bubble underwater.” - Sean
  • “My favourite part was when I got to taste a salty rock. I liked the taste of it.” - Onal
  • “I liked making a fossil mold and I liked tasting the salty rock. I also liked testing and sorting the different rocks.” - Lula
  • “I enjoyed looking at the Earth’s timeline.” - Aiden
  • “I enjoyed making a shell fossil out of plaster and I also enjoyed sorting the different types of rocks based on their properties.” - Maddie
  • “I enjoyed making a mold of a shell and learning about the Earth’s timeline.” - Sienna
  • “I learnt about different rocks. Rocks can have fossils in them and crystals.” - Dylan
  • “Minerals make rocks. There are three types of rock.” - Thisath

I believe that Mad About Science was a great experience. I loved all the activities we did. We learnt all about the fossils and minerals inside Earth. I helped to create a visual timeline of Earth. The pictures on the timeline were so cool. I rate the incursion 5 out of 5 stars!
