"If you don’t like to read, you haven’t found the right book."
J.K. Rowling

With Christmas fast approaching and many of us turning our minds to Christmas shopping I thought it might be timely to include some book ideas for the children at St Anthony's.

As all our children are unique, so are their book preferences. Finding 'that' book is worth the energy sometimes required to secure it. I have put together a few guidelines that I use when choosing books for children.

  1. Consider your child's interest.
  2. Ensure that they can read the first page fluently, as we know that there is connection between fluency and comprehension.
  3. For Early readers I recommend decodable texts that match the letter patterns they have been taught.
  4. For students beginning on chapter books it helps to read to them and  ask questions about the book. I find Ahn Do books are  great for this stage.
  5. For reluctant older readers or those beginning on chapter books, I find that graphic novels are engaging. The Amulet series by Kazu Kibuishi is very popular with Year 3 students.
  6. Try to find time to read to your child, even if they are in upper primary.
  7. If children are reading something they enjoy discuss the story with them to promote vocabulary and comprehension.
  8.  Allow  your child to see you read a book, a recipe, a work document or a sign.
