- Year 7 & Year 8

Mr Jon Hawthorne

Stage 4 Mandatory

With the transition to remote learning we are facing many challenges with the practical Mandatory Technology courses we offer in Stage 4 (Years 7 & 8). This was the last week of the first rotation. There are 5 rotations each lasting 8 weeks. That means students in Stage 4 complete 10 different context areas over two years.

Most students completed their projects, however, with the rapid changing circumstances some didn't quite get over the finish line. We will move onto the next context area next week with initial design folios and work packs being issued on COMPASS and GOOGLE CLASSROOM on Wednesday when Yr 7 & 8 were both normally scheduled to have their first ordinary Mandatory Technology lessons. In line with the new remote learning schedules Technology activities are to be undertaken in the 10-11am time slot. Although it does say "No Electronics" students will initially have to download and print folio and workbook materials. They are all designed to give students some introductory skills and information for their new units. Most students who indicated that they did not have good internet coverage this material should be in their work packs which were picked up from school. If there are any issues please contact me on the email below.

Below are some examples of the great work students completed during the first rotation. Also see the rotation schedule.

Mr Fulloon's Year 8 Wood Tech Class

Prior to transfering to remote learning, Mr Fulloon's Wood Tech were making some very clever spinning toys in a variety of styles. The videos below show them in action.

Textiles

This term Mrs Vicki Channon's Year 8 classes have been working on making colourful cushions. So many creative designs have been through up.  Technology allows photographs to be printed onto fabric! Well done Year 8.

FEATURE TEACHER

Meet Mr Jim Healy

Mr Healy has recently joined the O'Connor teaching community.  Born in Scotland, Mr Healy is teaching in the TAS and RE departments with Year 7 Tech, Year 7 RE, Year 10 DT, Year 11 Construction and DT and Year 12 Construction making up his schedule.

Light Boxes

Part of the Year 7 rotations are to make these cool little boxes. Cut with the school laser cutter, with the flick of a switch, they burst into light!

Creative Bird Boxes

Mr Hawthorne's Year 7 class have been constructing bird boxes. Bird boxes are a great way to work on a number of wood tech skills. Here are a couple of examples of the final product.

Food Technology

Year 7

Burgers were the order of the day, when Year 7 drew on their creative skills and created a variety of burgers in Food Tech this term.

Week 9

This week at school the students at school from a variety of year groups  made choc chip biscuits with Mrs Healey in Food Tech. The Food Tech room was a good place to refresh skills in hand washing before and after cooking, washing dishes in hot soapy water and the need to scrub down benches and sinks after preparing food. We also used the leftover potato

es to make taco seasoned wedges.

Students are continuing their learning experience with Food Technology as we transition to remote learning. Students have been sharing some of their creations with Mrs Healey already.
