Wellbeing and Welfare

This term the Welfare team has been working hard on developing policies and programs that support our students with their mental wellbeing and feelings of connectedness, social capacity and inclusion within the school.

For those that do not already know, The Lakes has become a Safe School which is a departmental program that promotes and teaches inclusion. The Safe Schools program has a focus on LGTBIQ students. It is mainly secondary based but as we are a P-9 school we have focussed on inclusion as a whole across both campuses. The following statement has been taken from the Department of Education website and outlines the vast areas of inclusion we focus on.

Welcoming student differences

Victoria has a strong and vibrant education system that celebrates diversity, and is committed to supporting the achievement and participation of all students. Education for all acknowledges that some children and young people have intersecting identities or additional needs that schools may need to take into consideration. These identities may relate to:

  • having a disability or additional learning needs
  • gender identity
  • sexual orientation
  • being an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person
  • race
  • cultural identity
  • speaking a language other than English
  • social factors
  • economic factors
  • experience of abuse, neglect or family violence.

Another key area of focus across both campuses has been building social capacity. The video clip below outlines some key points as to how we as a community can develop and build strong, resilient students.

Breakfast club continues to provide a nutritious beginning to the day for many of our students. For some it’s all about the food, the milo and for others it’s all about socialising, listening to good music with others and just chatting about games and life. Breakfast club runs every Tuesday and Thursday morning on both campuses and any one is welcome.

The Lakes was lucky enough to be mentioned in the latest Breakfast club newsletter which outlined the quantities of breakfast materials we have been provided with so far.
